Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - Sam3 - 05-04-2008 I've been thinking about RgrF's posts and while I see the point, I also was thinking that there wouldn't be any Little Leaguer that wouldn't absolutely love to attend a major league baseball game. I still have fond memories, as a kid, of our Cub Scout pack going to see the Phillies play. Just being in a Major League ballpark was awesome enough, but then seeing the game unfold made it all the more memorable. I support the Cal Ripkin Foundation idea, or any idea where disadvantaged youth get to see a MLB game; the memories the kids will have will be priceless. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - freeradical - 05-05-2008 It's kind of confusing here. Is there any preference on the part of Spearmint's family as to what he would want? Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - OWC Jamie - 05-05-2008 [quote freeradical]It's kind of confusing here. Is there any preference on the part of Spearmint's family as to what he would want? From what Alphadog has posted that I've read, it appears, not yet. I don't think anything is cast in stone for a "in lieu of flowers" project. I think it's great that DMann and Alphadog have contributed some time and effort for those looking fora way to turn shine some light on a sad heart. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - RgrF - 05-05-2008 I want to apologize if I was strident about this earlier. I'm a youth coach and seeing how starved youth sports are for funds the idea of contributing to a Major League Teams bottom line upset me. For myself I've funded two baseball scholarships at the park where I coach basketball. The baseball coaches will decide who gets them. The only proviso is that they go to a boy or girl who has never (due to family financial circumstance) had a chance to be on a Little league or Park League team before. In policy the LA City Park Department is supposed to offer this sort of opportunity, the sad fact is that in the kids whose parents can pay are the ones who get to play. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - mattkime - 05-05-2008 my vote if for funding kids to play or some sort of animal rescue organization. i think it would be good to consult the family and consider their input. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - msglee - 05-05-2008 Another vote for the Cal Ripkin Foundation, unless the family has other wishes. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - AlphaDog - 05-05-2008 Monday morning update: I've exchanged a couple more messages with Mint's family, but there isn't anything concrete from them yet. I suspect they're still pretty overwhelmed and not able to make a decision. In one of my messages, I had said that, in what was somewhat typical of our little family here, there was some disagreement about an appropriate recipient group for memorials. The response was: "I may put the "We care" in the official obituary, but I love the idea of everyone contributing to how they remembered Bob. Please let people know that." The "We Care" referenced is a no-kill shelter in the St. Helena, CA area. While many of us know Mint wasn't wildly impressed by living in the town of Napa, I know he lived for a while in St. Helena and would have loved to be able to go back there. The "We Care" organization provides either short term or long term care for animals in need of a home in the greater Napa Valley area. Here's a link to their home page: http://www.wecareanimalrescue.org/index.html I know 'Mint would have liked the idea of a place where animals can live out their natural lives in comfort and leisure. I think we're at that "it's the thought that counts" point in this. I propose that those of us who wish to make a contribution to animal welfare as part of this group designate "We Care", since that looks to be as close to a family preference as we're going to get. Those who wish to make a group contribution to a baseball-themed organization still have to decide who! I've seen good suggestions but have no preference. It's already been said by a couple of people that they will be making private donations to local groups, either in place of or in addition to a group contribution. I'm still thinking about how to go about letting 'Mint's family know about those. One idea I've had is to set up a new gmail account, and people can send a simple message saying they have contributed to "XXX" in 'Mint's memory. There's no need to stipulate an amount nor to reveal any other personal information. I'm just looking for some way to pass along to the family the information about donations that have been made privately in his memory. I'm certainly open to other ideas about how to handle that, and I'm volunteering to handle the communication aspect. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - Sam3 - 05-05-2008 We Care sounds good to me. If that's the family's wishes as to what Minty would have wanted, then by all means, lets follow those wishes. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - space-time - 05-05-2008 Look, I don't know what 'minty's problem was, but he seemed to have been depressed or something. Maybe we can donate to a charity or organization that deals with this specific issue(s)? That seems the right thing to do. Just my humble opinion, nothing more. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - Mike Johnson - 05-07-2008 Minty really liked the Special Olympics. http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/271157/271283#msg-271283 |
