Re: My name is voodoopenguin and I'm........ - blooz - 04-07-2009 I've got a couple wire enclosures which get my leaves, garden debris, coffee grounds etc. There's a nice sense of accomplishment getting vegetable waste to turn into dirt. I'm jealous, voodoo. I still have snow behind the house and frozen ground in the garden. Re: My name is voodoopenguin and I'm........ - michaelb - 04-07-2009 I have a worm bin in the basement, but I wonder if that is too cold for them. They seem to be doing fine, but don't eat nearly as much as I thought they would. Are you just composting your garden waste? Where are all your kitchen scraps? At the end of the winter my compost bin is frozen solid and almost completely full of stuff. I just cracked it a week or two ago and managed to stir it, so it should start cooking again. Vermont is obviously extremely cold in the winter; others might pull it off but probably too cold for an average sized home bin not to freeze at some point. Re: My name is voodoopenguin and I'm........ - Jimmypoo - 04-07-2009 What a CROCK! You know he just shoveled a bunch of dirt in there and everyone believes it's a compost treasure! Any real composter would have covered it with a thick PE or EPDM liner, stuffed a metal pipe into it and flared the methane, as well as taken care of that yapping Schnauzer down the street via a tour of the middle of the pile about 10 weeks ago! You people are so gullible just because of his accent! Sheesh! Re: My name is voodoopenguin and I'm........ - OWC Jamie - 04-07-2009 I thought I smelled something endearing. I want a bin in the basement, too, if the wife will let me. we generate significant waste, though with two little guys and two adults, so i'm not sure if we can do it all with worms. |
