Re: How Long Can You Survive With What You Have? - Blankity Blank - 09-23-2009 I was just sorting through my canned goods the other day. Time to restock. Right now I'm probably down to a week. I need to add a couple of cases of bottled water and another couple of dozen cans of chili, soup and some pot noodles. And a big bag of food and some cans for the critters. Re: How Long Can You Survive With What You Have? - Doc - 09-23-2009 I have about 2 weeks' worth of food in the house and 10 days of bottled water and soft drinks at 2L/day. ('Tho an adult male should probably have between 3-4L/day, 2L should be suitable for survival.) If it came down to it, I'd drain the toilet tank and boil the water from my fishtanks to stretch that out. I don't throw away perfectly good food based on some arbitrary date. ![]() Re: How Long Can You Survive With What You Have? - Mr Downtown - 09-23-2009 Living in downtown Chicago, I worry more about getting away from a dirty bomb than staying in the apartment for several weeks after an earthquake. There's a fair amount of food in the pantry, but I keep a couple of liters of bottled water and some pouches of tuna handy to throw in a backpack. I'm not sure what kind of protein I can keep around that wouldn't be so salty that it would cause me to drink through all my water. Re: How Long Can You Survive With What You Have? - Mike Sellers - 09-23-2009 All depends on whether rgG answers the door. Considering her backup plan, maybe I should reconsider. Re: How Long Can You Survive With What You Have? - Jimmypoo - 09-23-2009 After the cows and goats next door, there are a few horses. After that, there are the owners, who would conveniently be in the freezer from day one, for after the cows/goats/horses ran out. Of course I'm only talking in the worst case scenario - such as, war or "The South Rising Again." Or if the freezer I have now should die and I lose what's in there, by way of the previous neighbor's cows/goats/horses/wife. They don't seem to have had too much trouble so far, though one of them does have a phobia about mosquitos. Re: How Long Can You Survive With What You Have? - Lee3 - 09-23-2009 "They say" a soldier can march on a handful of rice and and a handful off beans (before cooking). Not a very happy soldier. I keep some rice and dried beans around because of that info.. I have always wondered how people survived in the wars, when you see their cities blown to rubble and under siege. |
