However, I'm still heavily medicated from this kidney stone, and have been sleeping a lot, I've missed this week's political events. When I wake up, I get updates, then doze off again. It's interesting to see her get this involved in current events, watching both conventions avidly.

I'm almost glad to be sleeping through the RNC. If you think Republican speeches are hard to watch, try watching them on drugs. Not a pretty sight!
Off topic, but how's the whole thing going with the kidney stones? I had a friend who was plagued with kidney stones for most of his life and I remember how excruciating the experience was for him. I hope they have better treatment options these days. Good luck on a speedy recovery. Does cranberry juice still help?

I agree with Lux. Media-manufactured is a meaningless label, candidates have been fine-tuning their message and crafting their public image since the invention of movable type. Teddy Roosevelt was a master at it. Benjamin Franklin was even better, his artificially-created media image was a feat of manufacturing genius. Franklin was probably more skilled at manipulating public perception than any political figure in modern history. Today's politicians can barely hold a candle to these guys.

I'd imagine it's much harder now, there's less distinction between public and private domains. And with 24-hour media scrutiny, higher risks for anyone in national politics. It's a required survival skill for any candidate. The climate is so intense that, unfortunately, it probably keeps a lot of otherwise very talented people from entering politics.

Muslim, too.
Wants to give away Czechoslovakia to Ahmadinejad.

The most important thing is that I spelled both "Czechoslovakia" and "Ahmadinejad" correctly without looking them up first.
Wait a minute - there is no Czechoslovakia any more.
Biden, clean-up in aisle 3.

PUMA!

Party
Unity
My
Ass

I just learned about it recently myself. As I understand it, it's an organization of disenfranchised Democrats and Hillary supporters. But as my wife explains, it's more than that. Some are voters who are crossing sides to vote McCain because they're angry about sexism, or angry about the direction the Democratic Party is going in (the DailyKos moveon.org-type left-wing takeover) some are former Clinton campaign volunteers, some are Dean-haters who feel the primaries were rigged in Obama's favor, all kinds of things. It's a bunch of Democrats who aren't going along with the "united" front, and voicing contrary opinions.

I'm not following this, my wife is (and she isn't a U.S. citizen and can't vote anyway) but here's a few things she pointed out to me. Orange is PUMA's official color. Hillary wore an orange pant suit when she gave her Convention speech. Also, James Carville--who is officially a vocal Obama campaign supporter--wore Puma brand running shoes on the convention floor, as a wink to PUMA members. True? Who knows. Reading the PUMA message boards is my wife's new hobby. I don't endorse the group, I'm just the messenger.

Here's a collection of PUMA-related sites, I'm not sure which one is the main site:

Just Say NO DEAL: Let the Counter-Movement Begin

If you thought you were alone, you're wrong.

We are a coalition of millions with one thing in common: NObama

Millions of disaffected voters -- or PUMAs -- have banded together to form a coalition of the unwilling... Country Before Party.

I don't see how any woman that supported Clinton based on her stance on issues can, with a straight face and a clear conscience, vote for McCain. That is even more true now that he has chosen a running mate that is diametrically opposed to Clinton on all social issues.

It is about what they have between their legs for these people, not where they stand on issues.

!. Palin isn't running for President 2. that fairly small minority of centrist Hillary supporters weren't necessarily die-hard Democrats to begin with 3. McCain had support among centrists and swing voters long before the primaries even started 4. if you can vote with a clear conscience and a straight face, so can anyone else, even if you disagree with their point of view. 5. For some PUMA members (and non-PUMA members) I share your view that gender identity is playing a larger role in their voting decision than policy issues, which makes no sense to me, either 6. the same unfortunately true about the Democratic ticket, for some voters, racial identity is playing a larger role in their decision to vote for Obama than other issues. 7 I can't think of a good one for number 7. 8. Clinton's position and Obama's position are more similar than many PUMA members seem to realize. Or they do realize it, and have a beef against the Democratic party that transcends both race and gender 9. What a nutty country we live in!

Thanks for asking, no progress yet, in fact, I'm still waiting for an appointment with the referred urologist, it's been four days now. In the meantime, I'm just taking the prescribed medications and following the instructions printed for me when I left the ER Sunday night. Drinking a lot of water and juice, resting, and doing reasonably well, considering I'm still playing host to an unwanted stone. It hasn't passed yet.

If that is, in fact, what my condition is. Since I've not had a CT scan or XRay yet, the diagnosis was only preliminary. It's not been identified it as a kidney stone with clinical certainty, just an educated guess (supported by urine sample) by the physician on-staff in the ER. I presented all the classic symptoms.

When I asked why they're all booked up, the urologist's receptionist said it was their busy season. Apparently, there are more kidney stones reported this month than any other. ALL the urologists are booked up, many of them in surgery. Is it because in summertime people are more likely to be under-hydrated or dehydrated? I will hopefully have an appointment for tests tomorrow, and get a conclusive diagnosis, followed by treatment. And yeah, cranberry juice is among the things I'm drinking, though I don't know if it has any benefit at this late stage. it wasn't recommended, but I got some anyway. I like cranberries.

I'm able to get along okay with moderatel doses of pain meds, though if I run out before my appointment I'll be less patient about the delay. I'm waiting for their office to call, hope to hear soon.

Re: watching palin, just donated to obama - kj - 09-04-2008

I think cranberry juice is supposed to be good for UTIs (althought it doesn't have enough of the active ingredient to be effective; there are pills). Dehydration can cause kidney stones, so fluid intake is important. If I have this wrong, somebody can tell me ;-).

I think the deal with media manufactured candidates is whether there is anything _beyond_ what has been manufactured. The "impression management" is necessary, but hopefully it is backed up by something more real. Like others have said, how would we know? kj.
