Actually, considering the contradictory disingenious arguments I'd say that kd is simply trying to push people's buttons. Some sad souls need to do that to feel validated.

Why can't some here accept kd's point of view without trashing him/her?

My only question to kd is when you get to retirement age, are you OK taking Social Security? If so, then you are already "leaning" on other taxpayers. This isn't any different.

I'm impressed that anyone could find a moral high ground in paying for medical services.

That said, you're avoiding the exchanges to your own detriment, more power to you.

It's not about a moral high ground, though. For example, I fully support Medicaid for those who require it; I don't want to see anybody have to do without health care, and I don't feel morally superior to somebody who can't afford it.

It's simply a part of my personality that I'm not comfortable leaning on anybody for anything, just as I'm not comfortable with other people (e.g. politicians) substituting their judgment for my own.

kd,

I don't doubt that the plan you had will be dropped. But in your original post you said you could only choose between "worse" offerings. I don't think that is the case. Maybe you don't like some aspects of the new plan but I don't think you can say it's worse in the way of decreased coverage overall (maybe bits and pieces, like certain Rx coverage).

If you don't mind me asking, what specifically do you think is inferior (your word) to what you have now?

I clarified elsewhere that by "worse", I meant plans that I would not prefer to my own. My existing plan pays 100% of all covered expenses after meeting the deductible, and the company tells me that replacement plans have co-pays and/or significantly higher premiums and/or restricted provider networks. I can't make a final judgment without seeing details not yet made available, but that's how it looks to me now.

kd is having a battle with his/her pride. I'm sorry but if you "qualify" for Medicaid you need this. Get over it and get the healthcare that you deserve and need. I'm sure you've never been able to escape a penny of tax money over the course of your life. Quit worrying about unnecessary things and make the most of the opportunities that presents itself on your behalf. You're finally getting a break. Enjoy it. You earned it.

Perhaps not pride, but no doubt there is an issue of self-respect involved. I can afford health care without taxpayer assistance, so I'd feel like a moocher getting it for free. In a sense I'd be using resources better expended on those who really need the help.

The thing is that there is no longer an asset test for Medicaid eligibility. So somebody who is rich, but has low income in a particular year, now qualifies for Medicaid.

Thank you for your good wishes. I'm sorry that you find yourself consumed with hatred for those who you think do not share your philosophy.

kd, allow me to apologize on behalf of the forum for the behavior of Dennis S. and davester.

I just started looking at rates in my state (via WebMD, as the Federal site is swamped and our gov. is refusing to participate). It looks like at my income, my rates could go down by about 30%. But I have not been able to compare plans. I won't say what percent of the poverty level my income is, but it's higher than yours. I'm also curious as to what plan you've been able to afford that sounds so good. My plan is expensive (to me, self employed) and not very useful.

It's food for thought. I do see Medicaid a little differently because it is intended to help the poor and disabled.

Now, I literally sat here for ten minutes pondering how I really feel about Social Security. I wish it were means-tested, and maybe someday it will be. In the meantime, I would probably take it but with some degree of discomfort. The $160,000 in FICA taxes I've kicked in over the years would soothe my conscience somewhat. :-)

Re: Way to go Obongo! - Speedy - 10-02-2013

kd, if you do choose to accept Medicaid, you are free to pay whatever deductible you choose. You can also pay a co-pay of your choice. Nothing in the law prevents you from paying your doctor or other providers. This also applies to Swampy who is probably in the same boat as you are. Now if only you and Archi could trade states all would be well.

kd, in my first working years many decades ago I had a policy that was probably like the one you have. It was insurance in name only. It had huge co-pays and deductibles with a $25k lifetime benefit. One surgery and I would have been screwed.

Medicaid is the best plan out there. Minimal co-pays and no deductibles.

Oh please, spare me the melodrama! No hatred was expressed. However, I do find it annoying that your posts are evasive and intellectually dishonest. The only philosophy that I wish fellow posters to share with me is intellectual honesty. At that you fail. I also think "kd" is likely a sock puppet, another intellectually dishonest practice.
