The TM backup is OS agnostic. Of course, anything that really requires a later OS won’t run but they will be few and far between. Run your restore and put your programs through their paces.

So, I DON'T need to upgrade first to HIgh Sierra before restoring from my TM Backup? SO I've got 10.11.6 installed. I want to upgrade to Catalina eventually but i can't find the installers for 10.13. I found the combo update but it says my system needs to be 10.13 first.....where would I find the base installers for 10.13, etc?

if you "bought" it before you should still be able to retrieve it from the Apple store.

Thanks!! It’s installing as we speak!!! My understanding is that my mini can handle up to Catalina but I am assuming I should do my Time Machine backup after installing High Sierra and THEN upgrade to Catalina. IS that correct?

Only go to Catalina if you are sure you have no 32 bit software that is important to you. Mojave is the last OS that can run those programs. So your next question is how to tell 32 bit apps from 64 bit versions. You need to install an OS first and then restore your backup. Get that far and we’ll talk.

Been away, but you done good.

I like your plan of opening back up and checking the cable to the old drive - if it’s loose make it solid; if it’s solid disconnect it and declare it well and truly dead.
