Re: Adding more subforums - mrlynn - 05-03-2013 This Forum is a Mac/Apple-oriented community bulletin board. That's why I like it. I vote for keeping it as it is. I have explained before, I don't go to the political side because I just don't have the time. I'm one of those obsessives who won't let go of a controversial topic when faced with opposition, and given that I'm in the political minority here, there's a lot of opposition over there. There is a reason why the generation before mine (and mine is older than I like to admit) used to "avoid discussing politics and religion." They easily lead to fights and name-calling. The only way to maintain such a forum is to strictly enforce rules of civility: no ad-hominem attacks, no swearing, no rudeness. That means moderation in spades. If volunteers can't keep the denizens on "the other side" in line, then maybe the solution is to close that side down and just keep the "tips and deals [etc.]" side the way it is. /Mr Lynn Re: Adding more subforums - mrbigstuff - 05-03-2013 just read Larry's post and I empathize with his viewpoint and his headaches but just drop the politics altogether if it is that much of a pain. If that does happen, I would be all in favor of allowing a few discussions of a political nature to take place on the "normal" side, just as happens(ed) elsewhere. Re: Adding more subforums - deckeda - 05-03-2013 I have a few comments in response to mrp-admin's query and a few later in response to what I'm reading from Larry. mrp-admin wrote: This generally isn't a problem for forum users, so if it's a perceived problem for someone else it would help to know more about what those expectations are. 1) Tips & Deals does work very well -- as-is -- when someone asks for something and someone else chimes in with what they saw. One of the hallmarks of this forum (and of dealmac in the earlier years) is that when someone asks something or posts something interesting you get a quick response from people. That's more rare than you think, even on boards with "a lot of volume" because you can't do that when the potential responder has to peek into sub forums. But because electronics are commodity items competitively priced there are few genuine, big deals. And we're a damn tight bunch here --- RYF means you better run because it's a legit deal, not some milquetoast deal anyone can save $5 on at any time. 2) The forum's search function really works very, very well --- better than many other sites that use other stuff like VBS or whatever. Having non-deals discussion isn't a problem, and a separate Tips & Deals would be a ghost town. 3) Ask yourself how you use forums with sub forums, child forums. It segments / compartmentalizes your discovery, which is fine when a site has a ton of common topics, each with lots of independent discussion. But here, my 6 year old Mac mini isn't terribly different than someone's new iMac when there's a question about either. Ask a question about one thing and at least half the time, you're really asking about something else. Welcome to Computer Tech Help 101 --- segmenting machines or OSes or iOS stuff into cubby holes isn't helpful or productive. Other forums routinely have people posting stuff to the wrong sub forums. More busy work for admins and mods, less utility for readers. Re: Adding more subforums - vision63 - 05-03-2013 I don't believe in "ignoring" anyone and I don't believe in snitchin'. I've never done either. I don't get it. Just skip what you don't like. Re: Adding more subforums - Speedy - 05-03-2013 Please don't change a thing! Re: Adding more subforums - Mike Johnson - 05-03-2013 I don't visit the political side, so I wouldn't miss it if it disappeared. Plus, the enmity leaks over to this forum, too. So wish it to the cornfield for all I care. OWC Larry wrote: Um, speaking of that, is there a reason why I can't unignore a person? I once Ignored a frequent poster and I can't undo it. Edited to add: Hey, I'll help moderate the political side but I'll be merciless. I may not be one of the top posters or part of the in-crowd, but I've been an active member in this community since long before DealMac made us all register for usernames. Re: Adding more subforums - blooz - 05-03-2013 Is there some legal problem to just letting the political side go on unmoderated? Just put a notice at the top of the page: "Enter at your own risk. Here there be dragons." Re: Adding more subforums - hal - 05-03-2013 Mike Johnson wrote: Um, speaking of that, is there a reason why I can't unignore a person?
