How would McGuyver make a soldering rod for two spots? - Dennis S - 07-10-2010

I need to solder a capacitor back onto the motherboard of my G4 - 2 spots. I have a cheap soldering rod, but I can't find it, and I don't want to buy another one. How can I get those 2 spots soldered with household stuff?

Do you really want to dick around with your G4 motherboard like that?

You cut up a penny so it is triangular. Heat it up on the stove and measure it with your infra red thermometer and stick a dab of solder on it. When the solder solidifies, you know the melting temp. Now heat it up about 50 F more than that and use the triangular point to solder the caps back on.

But first make certain to use an old copper cent. The new ones are just a copper layer over a tin core and melt at about the same temperature as solder.

Zinc, not tin.

I think MacGyver would probably either suck it up and go buy one for 8 bucks, or ask to borrow his neighbor's. He wouldn't dick around with MacGyver tricks just to save money and potentially fry his computer.

Now if this were needed to defuse a bomb in 30 seconds, I can't help. I'm not MacGyver.
