WW(you)D? MacBook pro 15" or 17"? - edgarbc1 - 07-10-2010

If I go 17 then I have to get new bag
But I might not get external monitor if 17 proves
To be big enough for my needs

If I go 15 a slight mod to my existing bag
And a likely candidate for external monitor
I would get high resolution screen option

17 is big. 15 is more portable

Thx for yr opinions!

Although I have neither its been my experience that the 17" is good for the "oooooooo" factor but the 15" is more practical. Everyone i know who got a 17" laptop wished they got the 15". So if I were to get one, it would be the 15". YMMV.

I think that your criteria should be a bit more pressing than just what size bag you have.

My son included ;-)

This is really where YOU need to make the call. You gave us NO indication of what you use your computer for? Does it HAVE to be portable or, are you just trying to settle on one computer for both desktop and travel?

What Apps do you live in? ? ? Do you make any individual presentations, or a small group of two and three?

Again, what are YOUR goals, needs?

Bigger isn't always better. But it is nice to have the desktop real estate. I have one of each and both get used about the same amount.

I have a lovely 17 case for sale.

I have owned both. I would get a 15 and a 24 LCD + KB + mouse.

17 is not for portability.

I've had three 17" laptops and have NOT wished they were 15". The Sony Vaio is heavy but, the 2008 & 2009 MBP's are under 7 lbs and I've had no trouble traveling with them. A good bag or backpack makes them very portable. My only regret was not maxing out the RAM.

I've owned both 17 and 15 Apple laptops at different times.

At times, I've missed the advantages of each - screen size versus slimmer bulk.

I decided to go with a 15 plus a nice external monitor when I had to make the same decision 3 years ago.

But I still enjoy using my father in law's 17 MBP when I get a chance. He's 6 foot 5, and being wider makes it a true laptop rather than something he has to balance on one leg!

I struggled with this question for some time recently before deciding on the hi-res 15". I really liked the 17", but the 15" seemed to be a little more practical (and a lot more affordable).
