Windows trouble: Connected but no internet - kap - 07-11-2010 Windows Vista Home Ed on a Dell desktop belongs to an uncle-in-law, who lives 3 hours away. All the settings checked out. I suspected it might be the anti-virus and/or the firewall that are blocking internet access. What do you think? Re: Windows trouble: Connected but no internet - Carm - 07-11-2010 My first bet would be a trojan blocking internet. Try malwarebytes and do a quick scan. Next bet would be crappy DNS server. I have timewarner cable and their DNS server would always be crapping out. I changed to OpenDNS servers. 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 Joe Edit: If he is getting the "connected, with limited or local only" its probably DNS server causing problems. Re: Windows trouble: Connected but no internet - btfc - 07-12-2010 More info needed. Has he tried to connect via ethernet to the DSL/Cable modem? Are other computers able to connect? Standard Windows firewall? Recent virus or spyware activity? Re: Windows trouble: Connected but no internet - kap - 07-12-2010 His Dell desktop's connection is a wired DSL. His Mac and his wife's Windows 7's are wireless and they both are working just fine. I already send him an email via his wife to temporarily unhook the ethernet cable from the modem, deactivate Norton and Windows firewall, reboot the system then hook up the ethernet cable and try to connect to the internet. Use the DNS servers from OpenDNS.com, they are more reliable. Also, have him manually set the IP address. One computer I had would try to connect with an IP address that was out of range. Really weird. Joe Re: Windows trouble: Connected but no internet - kap - 07-12-2010 Joe, Will have him use your suggestion. Will post back on the result. Thanks! |
