Preventative maintenence DiskWarrior style - Fritz - 07-11-2010

Thinking about getting DW and doing some preventative maint.
In that my 3 or more year old dualie 2G Xeon has been pretty stable and also heavily
used, I'm thinking a little DW wouldn't hurt.
Anyone else do pm on their OSX boxes?
Or are they just so far away from the OS9 experience?

What is the preventative maintenance you were hoping DW would do?

OS 9 days = DW, techtools and even norton

OS X days = nothing, I dont even "repair permissions" = "rebuild your desktop"

I keep current with the versions of DW, and run it about 3-4 times a year on both my bootable backup drive and internal drive, and from one when the other gets wonky.

It is the third line of defense after MainMenu cleaning and Safe boot. I originally bought it for emergency repairs. It has saved my bacon and that of others many times. I would not be without it.

DW can fix minor problems before they become major problems.

hence: "Preventative maintenance"

Re: Preventative maintenence DiskWarrior style - Fritz - 07-11-2010

directory rebuild was and, I suppose, is DWs main strength.
saved my arse a couple times in pre X days.

not repairing perms for me isn't an option. I've been clobbered too many times by inadequately finished apps or apps that get frequent updates.
Like ProTools.
Repair perms fixed those problems, every time.

But enough power outs, install/remove apps that don't cut it, blah, blah, blah.
So I'm thinking directory maint.

"PM' under Snow Leopard is done automatically by scripts and launchd. Some folks still mistakenly refer to this as running cron scripts.

From reading the many "kernel panic & it just crashed" topics here in the past 6 months or so, I am getting the impression much of it is caused by improper use of utilities and/or incorrect installation of apps & drivers.
This is just my own conclusion and I could be entirely wrong :dunno:

Running 10.6.4 & using no 3rd party maintenance app for over a year.
This on a C2Quad fauxMacPro {plain vanilla retail install}; running 24/7.
