World Cup 2010 is over (spoilers) - Seacrest - 07-11-2010
Spain
Discuss. Re: World Cup 2010 is over (spoilers) - beagledave - 07-11-2010 Smart octopus. Re: World Cup 2010 is over (spoilers) - Grace62 - 07-11-2010
Brilliant winning goal, beautiful technique. The Dutch were not the best sports, the better team clearly won. What did it say on his tank when he took off his jersey?
Does the entire thread have to go like this or will people not click since you put "spoiler" in the subject line? Re: World Cup 2010 is over (spoilers) - Grace62 - 07-11-2010 Never mind, I see it now. Siempre con nosotros. Re: World Cup 2010 is over (spoilers) - rgG - 07-11-2010 Not a pretty game, but thank goodness it is finally over. My daughter, just back from Spain, will be thrilled. Re: World Cup 2010 is over (spoilers) - M A V I C - 07-11-2010 Soccer needs either more officials on the field, instant replay... or something to make it more legit. Too much acting, too many bad calls... otherwise it should be reclassified as "sports entertainment" and put into the same category as pro wrestling. It's said that the only and winning goal shouldn't have been counted since the player was offsides. Re: World Cup 2010 is over (spoilers) - Silencio - 07-11-2010 Iniesta was onside by miles. What a terrible and disappointing final, though I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised. Teams tend to be pretty conservative on such a big stage, not wanting to make a big mistake. The best team won, and thank goodness it didn't go to a penalty shootout. Yeah, it was obvious 8-) I also agree. As much as I like soccer, so much of this tourney was defined by poor officiating, it's bothersome. Even in this game, there were glaring calls. The Dutch player jams his boot into the Spaniards chest and doesn't get the red card yet the other guy gets run later in the game for something very minor? Odd. It was potentially an interesting matchup. The Dutch team seems like a bunch of thugs and the Spanish seem to fall down from a stiff breeze. As much as they all seem to complain and fall, I thought I was watching a combo NBA/NHL game. I didn't think anyone could feign dumbfoundedness at a non-call like a basketball player. And half the time they look like they were playing on ice without skates. I like what the NHL did to clean up the diving by slapping on a 2 minute penalty for the violator. Soccer could help its image immensely if they wanted to by doing something similar. I'd suggest that this game shouldn't color one's views about the potential for the sport. The acting is frequent but not all teams are like that. Anti-climactic ending but there were certainly a number of decent matches throughout. Re: World Cup 2010 is over (spoilers) - davester - 07-11-2010 Iniesta wasn't even close to being offside. Where on earth does that statement come from? Didn't you guys look at the replays? That was a perfect goal...a nice pair of passes diagonally through the dutch defense followed by Iniesta's beautiful composed under pressure setup and surgical execution. I don't understand mavic's complaint about bad calls. The ref's decisions were near perfect for the entire game (with the possible exception of a yellow card which probably should have been a red). I think that exception may have been more about the ref not wanting to destroy the world cup final by making it a boring 10 v 11 competition early in the match. As far as diving is concerned, there was definitely some overdramatization but frankly it was a brutally rough game. Until you've actually played the sport and understand what a kick to the shin feels like when sprinting at full speed down the field you really have no basis for criticizing a player who goes down from a late tackle. I think a lot of the complaints about diving are from people who simply like badmouthing the game and have never played. |
