21.5" iMac for switcher? - blooz - 07-11-2010 I got my 75 yr old writer friend down to the apple store and she is loving the 21.5 iMac. She's looking for something easy and problem-free ("I don't want to have to worry about viruses in my remaining years") She asked me today when we could go back so she could buy one. Any thing negative to be aware of in this machine? I've basically heard good things about them. Re: 21.5" iMac for switcher? - J-J- - 07-11-2010 get some extra AA batteries on hand for the wireless mouse. depending on usage the batteries will only last a month or two and then when it goes dead you have to replace the batteries or you can't use it. (well for all intents and purposes...) the keyboard batteries last a long time I have had my 21.5" since April. I got more RAM for it because even though it comes with 4GB, Safari and other programs kept sucking it up for some reason. Slowed things down a bit. I have no other complaints about this unit. make sure she does not stick mini DVDs or mini CDs in the slot loader. There is no "tray". Re: 21.5" iMac for switcher? - jdc - 07-11-2010 Would she mind ordering online? Apple has refurbs for $999. Or maybe Amazon for no tax, or macconnection for no tax and rebates... What app does she "write" in? Word? Maybe a copy of MS Office (Home office edition) would be smart, about $100. Re: 21.5" iMac for switcher? - Speedy - 07-12-2010 Yes, the display is too small. She won't regret getting a larger display. blooz wrote: Any thing negative to be aware of in this machine? Re: 21.5" iMac for switcher? - blooz - 07-12-2010 Thanks for the info. The 21.5 is bigger than her Dell laptop so she'll be happy with that. The Apple Store is offering iwork for 48 bucks with the purchase of a computer, I think she'll use Pages quite comfortably. Maybe I'll but her some rechargables for the mouse. I didn't know it used AAs. Re: 21.5" iMac for switcher? - haikuman - 07-12-2010 I have had mine since May and I love it.... mouse batteries barely last 1 month. Hey Blooz your robbing the cradle again....... *(:>* Re: 21.5" iMac for switcher? - blooz - 07-12-2010 haikuman wrote: LOL! Actually she's looking for a younger guy than me… Re: 21.5" iMac for switcher? - bhaveshp - 07-12-2010 I just bought my 72 year old in-laws the same 21.5" iMac. Just finished setting it up yesterday in fact. It replaced a 5 year old celery Dell and so far they're thrilled with it. They still need windows to run their MLS software (IE specific), so I set up an XP image using Virtual Box. Re: 21.5" iMac for switcher? - Black - 07-12-2010 21.5" is plenty big. The biggest possible drawback is they might have a hard time warming up to the flat keyboard.
