We've had a drop-side crib with our son, who is now 2. Have had no issues with it. However, he doesn't move around much when he's in it, and has never even tried to climb out of it, even though he's big enough to do so if he really wanted (like the kid down the street who apparently has climbed out of his crib repeated since the age of about 12 months).

The problem is, as the article states, poor wood quality and dangerous gaps. Our crib has neither of these problems. They also state that with one model, the problems can be due to hardware that is "assembled incorrectly". Not much chance of that with two engineers as parents...

If babies can't survive poorly engineered cribs how can we expect them to make it in the real world!?!

Mechanic friend of mine used to make lots of money fixing cars for engineers who did their own work. Same for other friends in the trades. As for myself, I worked 20 years doing computer support in an Engineering College. A few of the faculty were competent to follow assembly instructions correctly, most were not. So, I would not use just having two engineer parents as being much of a good point...

P.S. I have also known engineers good outside their expertise and able to repair and build many things properly. An example is my father. He learned carpentry from my grandfather and electronics/electrical workfrom the Army. He was also a source of many tales of repairs, etc. gone wrong among his engineer colleagues attempting DIY.

So where's the outrage? It seems as if everyone can sh!t bricks about an iPhone dropping signals they could work up at least a teeny bit of disgruntlement over a product that killed 36 children in the last three years.

Follow the money...

"But crib retailers and crib manufacturers will see a spike in demand for new cribs"

Because most of us slept in these selfsame cribs, or even more poorly constructed devices. And the 'what worked for me should work for my kids' is the most common parental thought process for parents.

Except for those damn cloth diapers. I'm VERY grateful for disposable diapers. I spent too much of my pre-teen and teen years changing cloth diapers on my baby sisters. Eww.....
