My R200 seems to be on it's last stubborn legs. it seems the newer CD inkjet models are the Artisan series. any other players in this market? i don't print on CDs to often and most of my needs are satisfied by my Brother Laser. but every once in a while i need this R200's capabilities. like, tonight for instance...

I'm transitioning from my R200 to a LightScribe CD/DVD drive.
The end results aren't the same (good enough for my needs), but the workflow is so much better.

In the US, yes. They own the patents, and won't license to anyone in the US.
Canon has a line that will, but they can't be sold in the US.

Seriously? That's pretty lame. Honestly, based on what I've been learning about patents lately, I bet if Canon challenged it the patent wouldn't hold up.

part of the patent is a tray-feed. That's what Canon's is based on. So Canon can't sell theirs in the US, nor can you order a replacement tray from Canon, and have it shipped into the US.
Some order Canon trays from eBay sellers in the UK, and flash their US Canon printers with the European firmware, and use the European drivers.

While I have DiscMaker hardware, as well as some Epsons, when I really want to churn out some discs fast and right from my desk, I use one of these: http://global.dymo.com/enUS/DiscPainter/default.html
...with great results. Might not be what you are looking for though (especially for what you want vs what it [only] does vs price)

HP has or had one -- some sort of AIO that did CDs
a friend has one -- but I havent seen the results
Ive done over a thousand discs on Epsons, they work great.

I have the Artisan 810 printer. I have not used the CD printing feature yet, but the printer has been an excellent printer . . . My plan was not to get another Epson, but the reviews on this one changed my mind. My wife wanted the copier and scanner features and those work very nicely!. Oh, and duplex printing too.
I have been very pleased in the 4 months that I have had it.

Before I wised up and bought and modified a Canon IP6700D I owned a couple of Epson RX series printers. Both were very unreliable due to their tray design which caused frequent jams. I bought a tray for the Canon from an eBay seller who provided the instructions for unsnapping the cover over the CD slot and for changing the parameter in the firmware to tell it it was a European model. You do void the warranty but there is little risk. I have been extremely happy with the printer and its CD handling. Just do a search in eBay for "canon cd tray". The various offerings will tell you which Canon printers they work with. Good luck.
