A little too close for comfort: 7000 acre brush fire 10 miles away - ztirffritz - 07-19-2010 http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gTUlGaN8z1XnzLE1EeYG3TnR-_0AD9H1S60O0 Right now the wind is blowing from the west with some strong gusts. Not a good situation. 1 firetruck has already been damaged by fire, a few firefighters have been injured. Re: A little too close for comfort: 7000 acre brush fire 10 miles away - mattkime - 07-19-2010 just say the word and we'll start the bucket brigade. oh, and you have an offsite backup, right? Re: A little too close for comfort: 7000 acre brush fire 10 miles away - haikuman - 07-19-2010 Hope you and Dave are ok *(:>* Re: A little too close for comfort: 7000 acre brush fire 10 miles away - wave rider - 07-19-2010 Put backups and stuff you can't replace in the car if you are feeling any inkling that the fire is headed your way. Pet food too. Authorities may not give you too much of a heads-up... Good luck! =wr= Re: A little too close for comfort: 7000 acre brush fire 10 miles away - ztirffritz - 07-19-2010 http://www.yakima-herald.com/stories/2010/07/18/range-fire-threatens-homes-in-west-valley-area Up to 8500 acres now; but it seems to be heading more south now. Re: A little too close for comfort: 7000 acre brush fire 10 miles away - MacArtist - 07-19-2010 Stay safe, Fritz! Wish I could send a lot of this rain we've been getting to you there. Crazy when the Midwest gets more rain than the coast of Washington. Re: A little too close for comfort: 7000 acre brush fire 10 miles away - ztirffritz - 07-19-2010 We don't live on the coast. We're in Yakima. Yakima is a desert, as is most of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. A tiny sliver of the state on the coast is wet, but the Cascade mountains block the rain from the rest of us. Yakima in particular is in the 'rain shadow' of Mt. Rainier. There is a temperate rain forest on the northwest slope of Mt. Rainier because the clouds roll up against the mountain and dump their load...very little of it makes it over the mountains. Most of our moisture comes from 100 year old irrigation canals pulling water from snow pack in the mountains. Re: A little too close for comfort: 7000 acre brush fire 10 miles away - 3d - 07-19-2010 Ick. How'd you end up there? As other's have said, back up your system and pack a duffle bag's worth of irreplaceable mementos. Good luck! Re: A little too close for comfort: 7000 acre brush fire 10 miles away - freeradical - 07-19-2010 I've never heard of brush fires in Washington, but it makes sense. It is quite dry once you get over the mountains. This is the current brush fire picture in Southern California. It seems like there are always at least few fires on any given summer day. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&safe=off&client=safari&rls=en&q=california%20brush%20fires%202010&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl ![]() Re: A little too close for comfort: 7000 acre brush fire 10 miles away - ztirffritz - 07-19-2010 We're up to 10k acres now, but crews from Spokane are starting to get here to relieve the exhausted local fire crews. They had 200 people working over night, many since 2PM on Sunday. |
