Traveling to NYC (Manhattan). Long-term parking options? - davec - 07-19-2010
(BTW- I just updated the news on my dad's VOIP phone. Things are now great!)
We are taking a family vacation to NYC (Manhattan). Being an Iowa boy....errr....old man my plan is to park the car for the 5 to 6 days we are there and use public transportation. What are the options for long-term parking in NYC?

Yeah if you can manage it I would try parking at a lot outside of the city and taking the train in.
EDIT: Or, if you can find a hotel with parking included.

Agree with the above. Park the car someplace in NJ and take the train into the city. I've done that in the past.

I agree. Unless money is REALLY tight just find a hotel with valet parking included. Dragging luggage onto public transportation is ill advised. Dropping off your family at the hotel then driving out of the city to park, then taking public transportation back into the city is a pretty crazy stunt to save a bit of money.

An Indian man walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer
He tells the loan officer that he is going to India on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000
The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of security for the loan, so the Indian man hands over the keys and documents of new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bankHe produces the title and everything checks outThe loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan
The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the Indian for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral against a $5,000 loanAn employee of the bank then drives the Ferrari into the bank's underground garage and parks it there
Two weeks later, the Indian returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41
The loan officer says, "Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzledWhile you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multi millionaire
What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow “$5,000”?
"Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return'"

agree with the above
The moderately priced hotel my family and use when we go into the city has a deal with a local garage for just under $25/day. It's three block from the hotel, so I can drop off the family and the luggage and walk back after parking.
As an aside, they charge double for 'exotic' cars.

I've driven into the city with luggage, stayed at a friend's pad on the UES and put the car into a garage across the street for about $32/day (this was about six years ago). You have to pay the parking fee as the cost of "visiting" NYC, no way around it, like the $7 tolls.

Jersey?! Are you insane? I've lived in NYC/Tri-State area for all my life and I still get lost in Jersey. The signs are just awful. You're advising this country bumpkin to drive into Jersey, park and then take NJ Transit into Penn Station, then he has to take the subway to whereever his hotel is? Good luck! That'll be a 3-hour detour for him—ON A GOOD DAY. LOL It's different if you know Jersey well.

Metropark (NJ) is about 10 bucks a day.
Dunno if the PATH lots will let you keep a car there over 24 hours any more.
