Moronic NYC Bomber Sentenced to Life in Prison - Doc - 10-06-2010

Faisal Shahzad sparred with the judge and smirked as the sentence was imposed for his failed attempt to detonate an explosives-packed Nissan Pathfinder on May 1 in one of the busiest intersections in New York. "We are only Muslims . . . but if you call us terrorists, we are proud terrorists, and we will keep on terrorizing you," he said, adding that "the defeat of the U.S. is imminent."

U.S. District Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum said the mandatory life term was important "to protect the public from further crimes of this defendant and others who would seek to follow him." As Shahzad defended his actions, Cedarbaum at one point cut him off to ask whether he had sworn allegiance to the United States when he became a U.S. citizen last year.

"I did swear, but I did not mean it," Shahzad said.

"So you took a false oath," the judge replied.

Shahzad, 31, pleaded guilty to 10 bombing-related counts in June, less than two months after he was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport aboard a flight to Dubai. Federal officials hailed the case's quick resolution, saying it showed that the criminal justice system can handle complex terrorism matters. At least 20 U.S. citizens have been charged with major terrorism violations in federal court this year, according to Justice Department statistics.

Legal experts have called the case a law enforcement triumph but said Shahzad's near-success in detonating the device should serve as a warning to federal officials, who failed to detect the plot. Shahzad's bomb fizzled before it could explode because of faulty wiring and the use of such ingredients as low-grade fertilizer. The smoking car attracted the attention of a street vendor, who alerted police...

Prosecutors also presented as evidence another video showing the results of an FBI-staged test blast designed to reconstruct the damage Shahzad's device would have caused.

The test explosion, at a remote spot in Pennsylvania, triggered a giant fireball that shot debris hundreds of feet in all directions, shredding four cars parked nearby and obliterating about a dozen dummies posing as pedestrians.

Do we really need to look any further than this

to know the potential destructive power of a home made bomb?

Thankfully, this guy was not too gifted in that department.

He's not a "Moron". He's a Jihadist.

The fact that he failed in his attempt does not make him any less motivated and reflective of the rest of his kind. The fact that the judge was a bit surprised that he would lie in his oath of citizenship demonstrates just how we Americans do not 'get' the Jihadist mindset.

Lying to the infidel is completely acceptable in their religious mindset. It's equivalent to lying to your cat. The Infidel are less than human.

> He's not a "Moron". He's a Jihadist.

In addition to making the bomb wrong he left his ID, his cell phone, his house key and his getaway car key in the SUV for the cops to find. He peeled off the VIN sticker from the door and dashboard, but didn't remove the number from the engine. He had email correspondence with the original owner of the SUV and used his regular email address. He went back for his second car, which was registered in his name, a day later after retrieving a spare key. After the networks reported that the cops had an ID on the top suspect, he boarded a plane under his real name.

Are you really sure that he's not a moron?

...

It's a deadly serious incident, but the fact that someone so dumb tried to pull it off makes the whole thing sort of surreal.

Um, his modus operandi and intent was to kill people, not blow up buildings.
He studied people traffic via street cams to ascertain the best time of day / opportunity to try t o get 40 bodies.

Much of the media is focusing on his 'Muslims will rule the world' rhetoric which only feeds anti-muslim sentiment.
Don't need a picture of a bombed out building for that.

Liberals boast when a terrorist plot fails on its own. If the same guy was captured before setting off his bomb, the usual suspects on this board would go out of their way to stop people from finding out what he was up to. Lesson: our only salvation is luck.

Oh, I didn't know that. I thought that an exploding car/truck would do both. Good thing McVeigh set off his bomb when there weren't any people in the building.

Was the judge "surprised" or was he confirming from the defendant that there was yet another crime, along the lines of perjury, committed?

Citizenship oath ain't what it used to be. I know numerous naturalized citizens among family and friends and I am sure they are not an exception. US citizenship to them means they get a US passport and can travel without a visa to most places. For the elderly, they get a handsome stipend without having paid a dime into anything. In CA, the combined Federal and state payout is, ready for this, $800 a month. So no, tears don't roll down their faces when citizenship is bestowed upon them. In fact, the moment it is done they start noticing all that is wrong with America. Guess what party they'll sign up for?
