If you can find the full quote, look for the part where she says that conservative economists gave her that advice. Re: Speaker Pelosi "If you want to create jobs, the quickest way to do it is to provide more funding for food stamps and - Acer - 10-08-2010 At a press conference in her home town of San Francisco, Pelosi explained that the program's multiplier effect –the amount of money generated in the local economy as the result of the subsidy– far exceeds the nearly $60 billion spent this year by the federal government and is a sure-fire way to stimulate the economy. For every dollar a person receives in food stamps, Pelosi said that $1.79 is put back into the economy. The U.S. Department of Agriculture cites an even higher figure of $1.84. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/10/06/pelosi-fires-back-at-gingrich-over-food-stamps/ Re: Speaker Pelosi "If you want to create jobs, the quickest way to do it is to provide more funding for food stamps and - Acer - 10-08-2010 More from the same report: The number of Americans receiving food stamps rose to a record 41.8 million in July and approximately one in eight Americans participate in the program, according to the USDA, with the average household subsidy receiving $294 a month. $294 a month, basically the value of the crumbs beneath the rich man's table. And $60 billion is what fraction of a trillion dollar budget? I'm all for encouraging people to take care of themselves, but it's hard to complain about food stamps without sounding like a selfish bastard. Bring some facts to support your view that putting money to buy necessities into the hands of the poorest people doesn't go directly into the local community and support jobs. What other action puts cash into the economy more quickly than this? (And we're talking about immediacy in this particular comment, not long term solutions, which the Speaker has addressed separately on many occasions.) |
