The most important feature for us is to be able to leave the slow cooker on for 8 hours or more. Also, where can I find easy and simple recipes?

For low carb meat + matching broth + Packet of french onion soup for 6 to 8 hours. Add peppers, mushrooms, and onions then cook another hour

Re: Slow Cooker - Gutenberg - 10-08-2010

The very definition of a slow cooker is that it cooks all day. You can definitely leave it on for eight hours or more on "low."

Cooking with a slow cooker is not as effortless as the manufacturer implies, though. You will want to sear meat, whether red meat or poultry, before putting it in the slow cooker to stew, and that means that you DO have to clean a pan. On the other hand, if you are cooking vegetable stew or vegetable soup, it really is that effortless--chop the veg, throw them in the pot with liquid, turn on the cooker and eat your meal when you get home.

Then a built-in timer is redundant?

Re: Slow Cooker - Paul F. - 10-08-2010

Depends...

If the timer can control START time, it can be great for making crock-pot oatmeal (with lots of dried fruit and some nuts) overnight... but it only needs 5 hours, so unless you're late to bed and early to rise, you need a timer.

Meat SHOULD be browned for most recipe's, but the crock pot allows you to do that 8 hours before dinner time :-)

I would not slow cook poultry since it is naturally tender.

Slow cooking is meant for tough inexpensive cuts of meat.

I am just that. However, I will not be fully awake for such a cooking task. One with a timer we will need. Any recommendation on brand?

You need to expand your slow-cooker horizons... it's good for more than that.. Although, it does excel at making the less tender cuts useable.

kap;
No brand recommendations from me... I don't remember the brand of mine, and I'm not real happy with the shut-off timer GUI.. so I don't think I'd recommend it anyway.
