can i speed up my tower? - bazookaman - 10-26-2010

I've got the first 2.66 version and it just seems to be getting slower and slower. I've got a 750gb hitachi boot drive. Plus a couple other drives inside for media and TM backup. Its got 16 gb of RAM. But switching apps or simple things like that seem to take a while. Maybe its just old and now I'm used to the speed of my shiny new imac at work.

Make a new user account and switch to that temporarily.

Is it noticeably faster in the new account? If so, you need to do some housekeeping/maintenance on your existing user folder.

A Nuke & Pave might be easier than doing all that, however. Do you have the original OS install disks?

How full is that boot drive?

Have you run any disk utilities?

I've got about 250 to 275gb free at any given time. I ran diskwarrior a week or 2 back. I try to keep my user account nice and tidy. Would a faster hard drive make a difference? Something smaller with just system and apps? Like a velociraptor?

A faster drive always makes SOME difference....

C'Mon.. you know you want to... :-)

there is likely something wrong software wise.

yes, you try to keep your account clean. just not always possible. try another user account.

An SSD would definitely speed up application launches and document open times.

It's OK, go ahead and buy the SSD we know you really want our approval for... you've made your point. You deserve it. You need it. You want it. You should have it. When you get it and post about it, we'll all be happy for you. Go. Go stimulate the economy. Make that tower faster. The world will become a better place because of you're doing so. Leave the velociraptor for someone else back at the old place.

SSDs would be nice, but on my budget, I run two 1.5TB HDDs RAIDed as my boot disk on my quad 2.8 tower. 2x2TB RAID in the other bays. No complaints here... With drives so damned cheap, this is a great bang/buck speed boost.

You may well have software issues, but even if not, you are limiting that machine with that one slow drive.
