"a really fascinating study that's getting buried with headlines about a "liberal gene." The authors are actually working with the hypothesis that an exposure to diverse views during adolescence helps promote a liberal outlook, but that genetic factors influence this process. And that's precisely what they found. Using a population of over 2,500, they checked the genotype of a dopamine receptor gene.

Among those that carry a form of the gene that's associated with novelty seeking behavior, having a large number of friends in adolescence ended up being associated with adopting a liberal outlook. A lower number of friends, and there was no connection; same thing if this specific variant is missing (so, in some ways, there are a bunch of conservative alleles, too). It's a great example of how genetic and environmental influences can combine to create a complex behavior."

So there is hope for a cure?

Yup. Just like homosexuals can be cured.

It all starts with praying for them. Or preying on them.

I can't remember which it is.

Then likewise there should be a cure for the racist, bigoted, and intolerant.

Leave Mel Gibson out of this -- the guy just lost his job.

there have been brain imaging studies showing the differences in liberal brains vs. more conservative. As I recall, the group doing the study didn't seem to be clearly "independent', but their results were pretty solid.

People are just wired different..

I would think this is related to why conservatism always loses in the long run. Once enough of a liberal beachhead is established, the "idea" is no longer novel and can then gain greater widespread acceptance, even among genetic conservatives.

Gender and racial equality are obvious recent examples; gay marriage is an example of the transformation currently underway. In history, ideas like "personal freedom" and even the "constitution" were wacko liberal ideas that were later widely adopted later.
