Brother HL-2140 toner light stays on after toner was replaced in cartridge - Dennis S - 11-16-2010

I put new toner in my Brother HL-2140 cartridge, but when I put it back in the printer, the toner light stays on. I have done this several times with other Brother printers with no problem. I put black tape over the light sensors after it didn't work the first time, but it didn't help.

There were mentions of holding down reset buttons and turning back a knob in the general instruction sheet that came with the toner, but I couldn't find the corresponding parts on my cartridge.

When I push the blue button to turn the printer on, it flashes normally and then I hear the high-pitched sound like a page is going to print, but then the blue light goes off and the toner light comes on.

Any suggestions?

Three fixes suggested in this thread:

Search for 2140. Possible fixes include tape, a complicated reset-procedure and surgery to turn back a gear.

I had tried the method below before, but I think I did it wrong. I made sure to follow it perfectly this time and the blue light stays on and there is no toner light on. It is storming now so I can't try a print job until morning, but it looks good so far. Thanks for the help.

\\The following method below worked for HL-2140. THANKS! I routinely check my levels myself and am using a starter cartridge on 3rd refill. Still looks great and have not bought flag gear. I needed a way to use my printer without buying a new cartridge (yet)and this worked for me.
1. Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps.
2. Turn the printer off.
3. Hold the 'go' button while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on.
4. Release the 'go' button.
5. Press the 'go' button 2 times.
6. Pause.
7. Press the 'go' button 5 times.
8. The toner light should be off.
9. The paper light should be on or flashing.
10. Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.

Where did you get the toner cart? I ask because a printer I bought for my roommie got all of 42
pages out of the starter cart, and then got a MeritLine cartridge. It was temperamental but I had
her shake it up (not your issue, I don't think) in case it used the internal LED sensor system.

The "toner empty" or some other light was on, but that took care of it after a few tries. I'd just
assume stay away from any particularly problematic carts - but the next ones (and the one in
my HP 2015) have been just fine - and I'm very pleased for the $$. Hers are $16 each! Mine was $34.

I bought only toner, not a cartridge. I get it from a place off ebay and have used 6-8 bottles of it on various Brothers. I buy direct now and bypass ebay. The bottle was $8 including postage. I assume the HL-2140 was the first Brother which had to go through a rigamarole for resetting the toner light.

Wow Dennis. This is the only thing that worked. My Brother HL2140 was flashing all of the lights and when you held down the blue button, the toner light stayed on. We tried about 15 different solutions including the tape over the sensors. This worked, I felt like I was sending some secret code. Awesome. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! THIS WAS AN EXPENSIVE PRINTER

Thank you Dennis S! This was the only thing that worked. After following your steps, the toner light went off, but it wouldn't print. So I turned the printer off and on again, and it printed like a charm!

Also, after following your steps, my computer said something about "completed installing drivers", so maybe your steps somehow fixed a printer driver error? Either way, THANKS

My thanks to Dennis S for his November 16, 2010 12:24AM posting. It worked!! Who in the heck came up with press the 'go' button (which should just be called the 'blue' button, took me a bit to figure out what the heck a 'go' button was). Turn off power, hold blue, pause, press twice....... Unbelievable! Did have to turn power off after completing and then on again, but then it was smooth sailing.
Thank you again.
