The Ultimate Plow Truck? - chopper - 12-13-2010

24 inches of snow in one day here showed which plow trucks work for driveway work and which ... lack ...

My plow guy's extended cab, long box Dodge with a huge plow in the front was stuck three times in my driveway. Longbox Chevy for my neighbor was having a hard time turning around.

It got me thinking. Ultimate plow truck? I'd bet it is something like a short wheelbase diesel truck with a sanding rig in the back for weight.

An old plow guy once told me he could plow in any 4 WD truck that had "good heat, good ventilation and a good tranny".

Good snow tires, maybe with chains, a manual transmission with granny gear, transmission cooler, 4.10 rear with lockable differential, 4x4 (of course) and a good driver. Not to mention a properly sized plow. If it's too wide, the truck might not be able to push all the snow.

The ideal set up would include a truck mounted snow thrower. Throwing it is easier than pushing it.

My F250 Super Duty 4x4 will chew thru snow piles in 4 wheel low. Don't have a plow, so I'm not sure how it would do. But 24 inches of snow is a lot of weight and unless you have momentum on your side, it might be difficult to plow. Probably should have been plowed mid-way thru the storm.

It's hard to beat an articulating loader for moving snow.

Sander or concrete blocks in the box.
I've heard plowing is tough on brakes.

A FEL (front end loader) isn't all that great for plowing snow. I have one.
It moves piles with ease though.

Why no pictures? ;-)

Look up the pickup made by International. It is gargantuan. Probably utterly useless in the snow, but maybe it is big enough to create its own weather patterns.

Around here, plow guys use tractor mounted snow blowers...like this:

uni-mog.

no, really, many "plow trucks" are just pickups doing double-duty as landscaping trucks or some such. many do not have proper snow tires and the ones that do don't adhere to the rule of "skinnier in snow" because that is somehow not as macho as big fat tires. and, yes, a sander in the back makes all the difference.
