Tiger on a B&W? - MysteryGuest - 05-07-2006

Call me crazy, but I was happily running Panther on a B&W. I gave it to a friend a couple of weeks ago. She has to buy her own set of installation disks and I told her to get Panther. (Heck, it's a big step up from the 6400 with OS 8 she was using until then.)

But could she run Tiger? Is anyone doing that and living to tell the tale? The B&W has a gig of RAM and a fast upgraded drive, I forget the specs on that.

I should mention that all her software is in Classic (natch) except what comes with the system, major apps the venerable Quark 4.1 and Photoshop 4 (I think).

Yup, Tiger runs grrreeeeat on a B&W. Pretty amazing, for a machine that you can get these days for $50.

That really is impressive. Try doing that with Windows...oh, wait, Microsoft hasn't updated their flagship OS since 2001. Nevermind.

Speaking as one who did it with the 400MHz cpu and a horrible Powerlogix G3 upgrade as well, I wouldn't say great. Possible yes, great I don't think so.

Re: Tiger on a B&W? - PeterB - 05-07-2006

bangman, I think it depends on your exact config. I would suggest:

1) Make sure to have a nice fast 7200rpm hard drive, with a good cache

2) Max out the RAM if you can; RAM is now so cheap that it's hard not to justify doing this

3) Overclock +50mhz with a replacement cooling fan/heatsink combo on the stock processor-- of course a processor upgrade is nice, but the lower speed ZIF's can now be found pretty cheaply on ebay.

Some of you must have a high tolerance for extremely sluggish performance, if you are happy with Panther in a G3-anything.

I found it painful on a G3/350. A G3/450 isn't going to be much better.

Re: Tiger on a B&W? - PeterB - 05-08-2006

ka jot, I dunno-- all I can tell you is, I did a straight install of Tiger onto my B&W G3/450 Rev 2, which has the following upgrades: 1) Maxed out RAM to 1GB; 2) 40GB, 7200 rpm drive; 3) G3/500 mhz ZIF overclocked to 550 mhz... and it runs great. (Even with the stock 450mhz processor overclocked to 500, it still runs pretty well.) I think the major factors are the upgraded hard drive and RAM, and the fact of just doing a straight install (e.g., an install not bogged down with loads of unnecessary stuff, as is the case for my main system). By comparison, I have a Tiger clone of my main system installed on one of my Clamshell 466's, and it runs, but is poky... so I do think have a ton of extra stuff installed does make a big difference.

Ah, ka jowct, keep it in context. We're talking about someone who was happy running a 6400 with OS 8.0. Who will still be running it if the Mac itself hadn't given up the ghost.

Some of you guys lack perspective, for example, elsewhere on the forum, they're talking 'bout a guy who blew up a G4 for a hoot and a holler.

FWIW, Tiger runs just fine on my daughter's indigo iMac (350 or 400) with a 7200 RPM HD and 640 of RAM.

It'll be fine on the B&W.

Re: Tiger on a B&W? - kajot - 05-09-2006

A 6400 running OS 8 could be fairly snappy. My 7600 was. A B&W G3 running Tiger will NOT be snappy.

A computer and OS combination is not "just fine" if everything occurs at a snail's pace so that the machine can't do what I need it to do. I found using Mail and Safari painful on the B&W G3 with Panther. I can't imagine what it would be like to try to get work done.

I'm far from cutting edge, here: my newest machine will be four years old in September. Over the years, I've kept various old systems going for far too long due to various constraints. I would not describe any of these very outdated systems as "just fine", much as I loved them abd babied them along with various upgrades.
