Apple TV 2 sales at 1 million already. Got a question for those of you that have one. - deckeda - 12-21-2010 Today's announcement. When initially loading an iTunes shared library (so that it can see what ya got on your computer to play) about how long does it take to do so? Reason I ask is because on our original Apple TV (on an all-Gigabit network) this takes "a while," about 10-20 seconds? Re: Apple TV 2 sales at 1 million already. Got a question for those of you that have one. - Trouble - 12-21-2010 A second maybe. Very quickly. Re: Apple TV 2 sales at 1 million already. Got a question for those of you that have one. - Jimmypoo - 12-21-2010 Will AppleTV not let you play movies on your computer (attached or across the network) if they are already in the proper folder and iTunes will play them? (I'm referring to RIPped movies made into h264s/MP4s) That "feature" is not mentioned in the data. Streaming photos and music from iTunes is, but not pre-existing movie content. Re: Apple TV 2 sales at 1 million already. Got a question for those of you that have one. - Seacrest - 12-21-2010 i think you can play anything that is in your computer's iTunes library, but I have only played music. Re: Apple TV 2 sales at 1 million already. Got a question for those of you that have one. - silvarios - 12-21-2010 Yep, anything that iTunes can see in the library (not apps or books obviously) will stream to the Apple TV. Ready for the crappy part? You need an iTunes account to enable Home Sharing. Pretty odd that you have to register with Apple to share your non Apple purchased media. You can get around that by using AirPlay to push the content from your Mac or iOS device instead of pulling the content via Home Sharing. Not a perfect solution, but workable depending on the configuration. The old Apple TV can pull content via the normal ITunes shared library feature, not sure why Apple removed this from the new Apple TV. Re: Apple TV 2 sales at 1 million already. Got a question for those of you that have one. - edgarbc1 - 12-21-2010 can you stream content from an older appleTV onto the new gen appleTV? Re: Apple TV 2 sales at 1 million already. Got a question for those of you that have one. - silvarios - 12-21-2010 I don't think so. You would have to use Home Sharing or AirPlay from your Mac (either method) or iOS device (AirPlay). The old Apple TV cannot communicate directly with the new Apple TV. Re: Apple TV 2 sales at 1 million already. Got a question for those of you that have one. - deckeda - 12-21-2010 Sounds as if sharing via Home Sharing reveal a the content list faster than the old way of "adding a library"---and that may be why they changed to that. On the other hand if I can keep iTunes always running, Apple TV doesn't need to rediscover content. The list is instantly available and updated, always. FYI, AppleTV won't play just anything within iTunes. The reason is because iTunes can store and play anything QuickTime can play, whereas AppleTV has stricter requirements. Depending on the file, AppleTV either won't list it at all or will but won't play it. Re: Apple TV 2 sales at 1 million already. Is it more or less the same as the current version in abilities, except it has a drive? I was thinking about one to service our SD TV. Basically, could I stream from iTunes whatever and perhaps Pandora with RogueAmoeba AirFoil? Re: Apple TV 2 sales at 1 million already. Got a question for those of you that have one. - silvarios - 12-21-2010 The old Apple TV only has component and HDMI ports. Does your SDTV have either? |
