Web site peeve - Fritz - 12-24-2010

Are you less likely to buy from a site that can't be bothered to show an address or contact number?

That's my very first test - they absolutely MUST have an address - a street address before I would even consider testing further.....

Never occurs to me to check. I do 95% of my buying from Newegg and Amazon. I have no idea if they publish an address or phone number.

It's at best sloppy, and at worst deeply shady, not to list your business' official address and functioning contact info on your website.

Totally depends on what I'm buying. For some SaaS solutions, I know they're often made up of people based all over the world and thus don't have a single address. Plus they may all work out of their home and I wont hold that against them. As long as the service works well, has good reviews/recommendations... I don't have much of an issue. I can generally tell the difference between the website of a fly-by-night scam and a proper business.

For buying physical goods, I do prefer to know where they're based.

supposed I buy a $1 item from meritline and I pay with paypal, I am not going to check whether or not meritline lists the address/phone on their web site. Not worth my time

That is one of my main checks for an online retailer.

# 1-800 phone number for customer support (not just ordering) and they actually have somebody answering the phone instead of a small shop depending on an answering machine.
# listed street address for returns (helps to see their storefront on Google Street view).
# ResellerRatings entry that is six months old.
# https order page that shows estimated shipping and handling costs before you enter the credit card number (sadly, lots of places fail this).
