SGI DOA - papercup - 05-08-2006 Silicon Graphics files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy...Wow, I remember doing work for them in the early 90's, money was no object, their style & design was way above the beige Apple centris's of the day, and the machines drove the burgeoning CGI hollywood movement. The sprawling campus is literally in the shadow of Google HQ, who purchased the former Adobe HQ. http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/states/california/northern_california/14529944.htm ![]() Re: SGI DOA - microchip13 - 05-08-2006 I'm very sad. We've got 2 SGI Indys at school, mine still running Irix 6.2. I like SGI, great sense of humor: "Do not throw mouse at coworkers" "pressing s will simultaneously make your coworkers happier and improve your framerate" I wish they were doing fine. Re: SGI DOA - jdc - 05-08-2006 im no genius, but there shares were trading at 32 cents? (according to the article) does that seem silly? Re: SGI DOA - Paul F. - 05-08-2006 jdc; If you think .32 cents is funny; I currently own 5,280 shares of a company that is trading at .0015. That's fifteen hundreths of a cent. A speculative venture that didn't pan out ![]() Re: SGI DOA - microchip13 - 05-08-2006 I'm going to buy some SGI stock. Re: SGI DOA - BigGuynRusty - 05-09-2006 JEEZO! They are reorganizing, not dead! Snippet.: ""We want to assure our customers, our employees and our communities that SGI is operating-business as usual," Dennis P. McKenna, the recently appointed, Chairman and CEO of SGI, stated. "Our customers can continue to rely on SGI for its mission-critical products, services, and support."" The Link.: http://www.sgi.com/company_info/newsroom/press_releases/2006/may/sgi_reorg.html BGnR Best hardware, everything was on sleds, no screwdrivers required. Re: SGI DOA - rexrzer - 05-09-2006 Wow, I guess that just goes to show you when it rains, it pours! To think I still use two SGI 1600SW 17.3" widescreen LCD displays here...one on my G5 Dual Core, and the other on my G4 1.8GHz DP. They just won't quit. I bought them in 2000 for $2345 apiece, and followed that up with another $900 invested in the Multi-Link Adapter system, converting the proprietary SGI DVI-Link System to normal DVI, so I can use the displays with any DVI-ported video card. My sales rep, a real standup SGI company man, Matt Geier, must be looking for a new job today. He had been "promoted" to head of Government Sales, as the US Military contracted with SGI for a fair share of their business recently, he told me four months ago. It's kindof sad to see this happen. They sure made innovative products, for many, many years being ahead of the Silicon Valley curve ball. SGI will be missed. ________________ Re: SGI DOA - microchip13 - 05-09-2006 I hope they survive. Otherwise, I want to wait till they are pretty much dead, then buy them. Re: SGI DOA - bangman - 05-09-2006 They're just resting their eyes, like my grandma. Re: SGI DOA - Silencio - 05-09-2006 Wintel workstations really ate SGI's lunch from the late-90s onward. But SGI will reorg and keep serving some fairly small niche here and there. Yeah, there wasn't really a cooler box to be had in the early 90s than SGI iron, that's for sure. |
