Silicon Graphics files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy...Wow, I remember doing work for them in the early 90's, money was no object, their style & design was way above the beige Apple centris's of the day, and the machines drove the burgeoning CGI hollywood movement.
The sprawling campus is literally in the shadow of Google HQ, who purchased the former Adobe HQ.

I'm very sad. We've got 2 SGI Indys at school, mine still running Irix 6.2.
I like SGI, great sense of humor:

I wish they were doing fine.

I currently own 5,280 shares of a company that is trading at .0015. That's fifteen hundreths of a cent.

Wow, I guess that just goes to show you when it rains, it pours! To think I still use two SGI 1600SW 17.3" widescreen LCD displays here...one on my G5 Dual Core, and the other on my G4 1.8GHz DP. They just won't quit. I bought them in 2000 for $2345 apiece, and followed that up with another $900 invested in the Multi-Link Adapter system, converting the proprietary SGI DVI-Link System to normal DVI, so I can use the displays with any DVI-ported video card.
My sales rep, a real standup SGI company man, Matt Geier, must be looking for a new job today. He had been "promoted" to head of Government Sales, as the US Military contracted with SGI for a fair share of their business recently, he told me four months ago.
It's kindof sad to see this happen. They sure made innovative products, for many, many years being ahead of the Silicon Valley curve ball. SGI will be missed.

Wintel workstations really ate SGI's lunch from the late-90s onward. But SGI will reorg and keep serving some fairly small niche here and there.
Yeah, there wasn't really a cooler box to be had in the early 90s than SGI iron, that's for sure.
