I'm all for stickies for important information; even for a reminder of an upcoming gathering. But I can only imagine a time when there are 10 "gatherings" stickied atop the first page of the forum.
Why not approach this as was done with the DMP over at dealmac? A gathering occurs (or mini arrives) somewhere, someone posts some comments along with the link, and it's a done deal. Or better yet, the MRF Gathering page exists off site, and if you're interested in the thread and/or the site, bookmark it and return as often as you want. Everyone will know about the most recent gathering, just as they kept up with mini-leader's adventures.
Just a thought, but it seems fairly simple to me.

maybe the admins could set up another forum along with the two existing forums for "announcements". they could still setup another page somewhere to link to photos and other info.

I had to give up my preferred way to read the forum, threaded view, ages ago due to the loooooooooong stickies. It's nice that people want to get together and all that, but I agree that a third forum, concentrating on gatherings and other such announcements, might be a way around a big potential irritant.
The people organizing a get-together can put a link in their sigs: Mob Town MR Luncheon, 12th of Never -- click HERE for more! for example. No jumping emoticons, s'il vous plaît.

Yeah, & set up a forum for PC discussion, one for general discussion, etc. Oh wait, that's already been done & the vast majority HATED it.

Sadly, I just "switched my view". I'm no longer viewing the threads expanded and it's solely due to the idiotic sticky issue.
[Edit] Yes, I realize there's a "crisis in Sudan", and many other more significant problems in the world, so don't feel as though you have to remind me. I just felt like venting. I don't think the people who defend the stickies (for the most part) ever view the forum in expanded thread mode. If they did, they'd not only understand the issue, but would probably want to have the stickies changed in some way.
