can i get an academic discount at a store or do i have to buy online? - robfilms - 05-10-2006 i'm buying a tiger 10.4 for my emac. i'm a pta dad at my daughter's school the difference in price is $69 vs $129. i could buy it at the spring street store or online. i wanted it by the weekend, so the store has more appeal. if i go the store route, what do i have to show them? perhaps a letter from the pta? any and all thoughts are appreciated. be well rob ps- look down the posting lists to see my earlier scanner questions. i'm getting zip replies and could really use some thoughtful advice. thaks in advance. Re: can i get an academic discount at a store or do i have to buy online? - DRR - 05-10-2006 I don't think you can get an edu discount on software at retail. Re: can i get an academic discount at a store or do i have to buy online? - MikeF - 05-10-2006 If you can go to a University or College store and prove that "you're worthy", you can get it at the discounted rate. By worthy -- student or staff member. Some places will allow educational discount if you have a letterhead from the school, but usually has to be purchased by and through the school if it's K-12. Where are you located? Re: can i get an academic discount at a store or do i have to buy online? - Chupa Chupa - 05-10-2006 Unless you are a PTA officer you are not eligible for the EDU discount. PTA parents don't qualify. Re: can i get an academic discount at a store or do i have to buy online? - papercup - 05-10-2006 Apple store (online) requires no verification. Re: can i get an academic discount at a store or do i have to buy online? - robfilms - 05-10-2006 dare i say it, i am a pta officer. (i even have the badge to prove it!) seems like online is easier. it just won't get here by the weekend. thanks rob Re: can i get an academic discount at a store or do i have to buy online? - onthedownlow - 05-10-2006 Online would be easier, yes. Some stores actually do carry 'Academic' branded versions of the software (rarely on anything except the OS), and you can get them for an EDU price, but most don't, and only carry the retail packaging, so they can't sale it to you with the discount. Re: can i get an academic discount at a store or do i have to buy online? - cbelt3 - 05-10-2006 As a PTA "Elected" Officer, you qualify to make a purchase on the Apple store K-12. If you make a significant purchase, they ask for proof. If it's insignificant, they don't, usually (based on a sample of three purchases over five years, so YMMV). It's a bit like the Microsoft Student and Teachers versions they sell at the store- they don't ask, and you don't tell. It's all a bit of handwaving. Note that many of your local stores will acknowledge your PTA officer status, and have issued your treasurer a tax exempt ID card or other information. But that's just for buying stuff for the PTA or for the school, NOT for personal use. While Apple may not hunt you down, your local and state taxtation officers will kill you for pennies. Re: can i get an academic discount at a store or do i have to buy online? - clay - 05-10-2006 can't you buy online, and pay for quicker shipping? Re: can i get an academic discount at a store or do i have to buy online? - blusubaru - 05-10-2006 I have done both (as a student though) in store and online using edu discounts. I don't recall having to "show" anything other than maybe my student id at the Apple Store. It wouldn't hurt to try! Flash your badge like Secret Service ![]() |
