I see that they are still making them - anyone buying them or playing their 20-30 year old version their parents played with?

I don't have kids but the young children in our extended family play "real" board games. I think the parents need to be involved to get them started on it -- you can't just throw a board game into the room and leave them alone while you go watch TV.

Big thing now in our house is dominoes.
Just got this as a present - been playing a lot - the kids (ages 6-14) love it.

The Historical Society in town has a monthly "Retro Games" night where you can go and play board games with other people. We haven't gone yet, but it sounds like a neat idea.

We're trying to do more. So much of what everyone does here is in front of a screen. Played Uno the other day. Kid got Battleship for Christmas and loved it. Couldn't resist the temptation to look for an iPhone or iPad app, but all the "Battleship" games were either slideshows (!) or you play the game against the computer. FAIL.

I was never a fan of "board games" but my kids are big fans. My 4 year old stymies me at Connect Four (deluxe version) every time. I'm not kidding. Although Connect Four is not exactly a board game, it's a "gateway" game. ;-)

Guess Who, Sorry, Trouble, Connect Four, Uno (more of a card game I guess) -- they are great for winter Saturdays in the snow belt that is Northwestern Pennsylvania (after playing outside of course).
