Acetylene torches scare the bejeesus outta me - mrbigstuff - 01-19-2011

I know many people use them. I know they are safe if used properly. But. Yikes.

It's why I never go to bed or bathe with a one that is lit. Simple common sense.

They're no big deal...

A propane fired furnace or forge is WAY more exciting... especially to light it. The hair on my knuckles of my right hand never has really grown back completely... Big Grin

First time I lit one I did something wrong.
People came running from everywhere thinking a tank went off.
I couldn't hear a word anyone was saying.

You can't ignite oxygen.
Yeah, tell that to my ears.

You didn't ignite the oxygen...you ignited something handy that was saturated with oxygen, making it very very flammable.

A much bigger balloon.
I can be stubborn sometimes.

College roommate arrived with his tanks - he was skilled as an artist too, but he showed us a little baggie with a bit of paper towel sticking out of it and told us to STAND BACK.

yeahright... he lit it and it went up with a tiny little 'poof'... set it up again and again, "STAND BACK" and the thing went 'poof' again.

By the third attempt, we were not believing anything serious could happen and the little baggie. It BLEW UP with a horrendous sound. Smashed my pants against my legs at 30ft and send a wall of thunder toward the VA hospital 1/2 mi away that came back to us a few moments later. We ducked in the apt really fast and hunkered down for the campus police to arrive... they didn't...

having a skilled welder around the house was enormously handy...

That's why I don't want to buy CNG cars like the Civic GX

ahhh the acetylene explosion. Also known as a 'carbide cannon' (carbide mixed with water produces acetylene gas).

Oxyfuel is strictly for amateurs. For REAL heat, use PLASMA !!!
