Tech help for the mother unit - DaviDC. - 01-19-2011
Mom bought a Canon PIXMA MP495 Wireless All-in-One Printer & I was called upon to set it up.
I wasn't looking forward to this after my experience a couple of months ago with a wireless HP AIO she bought at COSTCO. Never could get that one to work so she took it back.
The Canon was a breeze to set up & it prints & scans beautifully.
I found out that now she's itching to buy a MacBook Air. There's nothing wrong with the 2 GHz MacBook I gave her a few years ago other than it's not new & shiny. The battery no longer holds a charge for longer than 10-15 minutes but that's not a big deal because she always keeps it plugged in. Guess I'll be selling it on Craigs List soon.
I brought her ancient Dell Dimensions 2350 desktop home & plan on installing Ubuntu on it. It's currently running Windows XP & takes at least 15 minutes from pressing the power button to becoming usable.

why on earth does one need a good reason to want a new computer? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?

All that Dell needs is a fresh copy of Windows XP on it, then it won't take so long to boot up.
Nuke-and-pave man. Or, run Ubuntu, like planned.

I downloaded ubuntu 10.10, burned it to a CD & began the install process but the computer froze.
I suspect that the BIOS might need to be updated but that caused it to freeze as well.
The Dell has a 2.4 GHz Pentium processor but only 256 MB RAM.

That MacBook will still be as fast as the MacBook Air.

I've told her that, but it still wont be as pretty as a new MBA. She wont even consider a refurb,
