Desktop model, not too big a form, must have a BD drive to back up my handful of BD discs, and perhaps future hackintoshable. Asking too much?

What would you buy that would keep all of this under $1k?

I would put it together and get an LG, Pioneer or Samsung/Toshiba (TSST) optical to put in it.

Wait... you want a $1000 machine to back up $100 worth of BluRay disks??

You can do much more with a $1000 machine than just backing up the discs. Sounds like he also wants to utilize a different OS to complement what he currently is using now - with the possibility for an Intel-based Macintosh later out of it.

I can spec it for you without hesitation. I've done it a dozen times already. And clock speed? Like you wouldn't believe.

Um, you know you can backup and burn your blu-ray discs on a mac, right? You just can't play them on the mac. And actually, supposedly you can with MakeMKV streaming to VLC. I've been trying to get the playing thing working, but have run into a few issues. When I run MakeMKV, the Blu-Ray disc disappears from Finder for me. Someone else reported the same issue, using the same BD burner that I have (an LG). It's connected via USB right now. I'm thinking of either replacing my optical drive with the blu-ray, or putting it in the second optical bay (where I currently have a hard drive)

when you figure it out, rz, post it here for our benefit.

until there is some support from Apple, I don't feel like kludging a solution together that may or may not work.

and this is not the only reason I would go with a PC, it's more for the expandability (i.e., less $$)
