iPhoto does not read RAW files? - George3 - 01-20-2011

I got a Lexar card reader for my eMac OSX 10.4.11 and it imported successfully the jpegs but not the RAWs. How do I get the RAWs in? Thanks!

Which version of iPhoto (or iLife, did it come from)?

What's the camera that created the files?

Did you verify RAW files are on the card? You imported JPEGs, maybe the camera wasn't set to capture RAW+JPEG.

Keep in mind some of the Mac's ability to recognize RAW files is tied to the OS, and Tiger is getting pretty old these days.

Which version of iPhoto? iPhoto does support RAW. Perhaps these links will help, iPhoto 5 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): Working with RAW images and iPhoto 6: Supported RAW format cameras

You may have a newer version of iPhoto than 5 or 6.

The version of iPhoto and the camera are important to know, as iPhoto needs updates to support the RAW format of newer cameras.

Here is the information:

iPhoto 6.0.6

Camera Sony Alpha A200

The RAW files and the jpegs are all in the memory cards. iPhoto downloaded the jpegs and rejected the RAWs.

Looks like you'll need at least 10.5.3, and possibly a newer iPhoto.

Mac OS X v10.5: Digital camera RAW formats supported: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1475

You are right. How do I update to 10.5.3?

Unfortunately, you will have to buy a Leopard retail disc and they have gotten rather pricey on the used market. How much RAM do you have installed? What speed eMac?

Should be good enough to run Leopard (that's Mac OS X 10.5). Finding a cheap copy can be tough. If you are lucky, maybe $50.
