iOmega NAS 1TB ($60) follow-up to follow-up - Mini 9 - 01-22-2011 Just have to say how good this drive has performed and how easy it is to administer. I was never a big iOmega fan at all. But this drive has done well. I have been ripping DVDs and VHS last week. I had two RipIt sessions going at all times, and two queues of Handbrake conversions going around the clock, too. Plus streaming of ripped/converted video files being played by others. So, 5 to 6 Macs all hitting this drive at the same time. It's been a trooper through it all. I can fit a lot of movies on this after converting down to 400 mb files! ----> original follow-up <------ got my $60 1TB NAS from the woot deal. http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,1039237,1039237#msg-1039237 While the woot page says 90 day warranty ... http://sellout.woot.com/blog/viewentry.aspx?id=15023 once registered with iomega, it shows they give it a 3 year warranty. (woohoo) ![]() Now, just plugged it into power, and ethernet, and the Mac finder, left pane shows the drive ready to go. ![]() And Time Machine prefs see it as a valid Time Machine backup drive. ![]() The interface for managing folders is easy enough. Buttons toggle iTunes sharing and DLNA sharing. ![]() It can be set up to share photos, manage torrents, and act as ftp server. ![]() Overall for $60 a gigabit NAS with all those features is great. I bought this as a test before buying their dual-drive NAS. The dual-drive NAS also allows IP Cameras to be recorded as a DVR. I have an IP Camera I want to record and that would be great. _____________________________________ Re: iOmega NAS 1TB ($60) follow-up to follow-up - Panopticon - 01-22-2011 I was originally upset I missed that deal, then I got a QNAP TS-210 Turbo NAS for $60 and two 1TB HDs for $88, both from Amazon. http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,1049398 So yeah, I spent more $$, but I got a 2TB NAS with RAID, ez setup & use, good performance {imo}, and great support on the QNAP website. Still, if I'd seen the woot sellout, I'd now have at least one of the Iomega's  Re: iOmega NAS 1TB ($60) follow-up to follow-up - mattkime - 01-22-2011 thanks for the review, might pick one up! Re: iOmega NAS 1TB ($60) follow-up to follow-up - mattkime - 01-22-2011 how did you get that QNAP NAS for $60? It comes out at $250+ on amazon. I think it's been defective from the beginning, but I managed to get it operational as an iTunes backup device for about 5 months. It crashed over break, and I have not been able to resolve the technical issues. I suspect it's hardware, but their tech support is pretty modest online. And to download firmware updates requires a full registration and login; not a big deal, but I often run tech support on machines that do not have email records (with registration info). Glad for the posting, however - makes me optimistic that when I DO get this baby (or its replacement) running, it should not be high maintenance. Re: iOmega NAS 1TB ($60) follow-up to follow-up - Mini 9 - 01-22-2011 hope you can get it resolved under warranty! That's why I'm just putting impersonal media on it for now. I keep my important stuff backed up and on a RAID in a G4 server. |
