Wordpress/Joomla or iWeb for simple website? - john-o - 02-22-2011
I have a friend that I've offered to help set up a simple website for her new yoga studio. I could whip something up pretty quickly in Dreamweaver, but she needs to be able to easily edit things like class schedules, add photos, etc.
I've hardly scratched the surface with Wordpress/Joomla-type sites, but would love an opportunity to learn more about that side of web design. On the other hand, am totally familiar with iWeb, and that could make it really easy for her to update her site... What would you recommend I use to do this?
I know some of you will be tempted to scoff and ridicule, but please, just try and be kind. If you think I'm crazy, don't bother sharing your derision, okay?

Might be a good reason to dive into Wordpress or Joomla. I'd like to find the time for that myself.

I've been looking at Weebly. I've used Joomla but use iWeb for now, I don't include web design on my resume, BTW. Anyway, I think iWeb is great, very simple to use, but I like the idea of a web-based program so it can be edited anywhere and by anyone if need be. If she has a Mac and will be the only person doing the editing, iWeb is probably the fastest and easiest to learn.

issue with iWeb is having her edit it isnt as easy as you think.
you cant just send her the files and have them open in iWeb.
you need 3rd party software, like Multisite for iWeb for that to work.
And she would have to be familiar with iWeb as well.
Ive been looking at Conrete5, no idea if this would work.

Joomla is my preference. I find it powerful and flexible. But, I think many would consider it a steeper learning curve than WordPress.
I'd say WordPress would be easiest for a one time thing, and for a client/friend to work with.

I think I'd go with Wordpress. I've tried Joomla and Wordpress, and found Wordpress easier to work with. Joomla is a little too powerful, too many choices for a simple website. iWeb is fine, too, but if you want to do any tweaks outside of iWeb's templates, the HTML and scripting are a mess to sort out.

tweaking outside of iWeb is simple... you do not have to follow the templates in any way, shape or form.
start with a blank site any size you want.
for example: http://web.me.com/krisandjeff/Floragraphics/home.html No templates/

Wordpress would be the way to go. And if you have any CSS skills it's even better.

Thanks all... Great feedback.
I checked out Weebly and Squarespace, but since she already paid for hosting at GoDaddy, I think I'll stick with something easily hosted there. Lot's more research to do!
jdc, I'm confused by your comments. Are you saying you created that site outside of iWeb, but can then edit it from within iWeb going forward? Love to know how you're doing that!
Thanks again everyone, I'll let you know how it goes... And btw, like mstudio, I don't list web design on my resume either! I've dabbled in it since the early hand-coding days, but am not sure I can keep up with all the tricks of the trade these days...
