Somehow hurt my knee...Suggestions? - microchip - 03-15-2011 My knee randomly started hurting the other day. I was walking to work, about half the way there, and boom, my left knee became very unhappy. Since then, it only happens after I walk a certain distance. IE, I can sit down for a bit and then walk around some before it starts to kick up again. I feel this is pretty bizarre. Obviously, if it doesn't feel better in a few days I'll have it looked at, but I'm just curious what(if any) sort of precautions I should take in the interim. Should I get a brace of some sorts? Re: Somehow hurt my knee...Suggestions? - cbelt3 - 03-15-2011 RICE Rest Ice Compression Elevation I have 'trick knees' courtesy of Junior High full contact football (and weighing perhaps 98lbs back then). I wear a neoprene knee brace when one goes out. Usually last a couple of days. The brace lives permanently in my work back-pack, just in case. Re: Somehow hurt my knee...Suggestions? - $tevie - 03-15-2011 At the risk of encouraging hypochondria, here's an interesting chart: http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/home/tools/symptom/542.html I myself have patellofemoral pain syndrome which required exercises as shown on this link: http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/home/healthy/physical/injuries/479.html PS: before I knew what it was I tried a knee brace and it hurt like hell. Re: Somehow hurt my knee...Suggestions? - mattkime - 03-15-2011 can you provide more description than "unhappy"? Re: Somehow hurt my knee...Suggestions? - Tommie Milwaukee - 03-15-2011 Sounds like his knee needs pain meds ... & lots of 'em! Re: Somehow hurt my knee...Suggestions? - microchip - 03-15-2011 I can! It's almost like a stretching/pinching on the outside of my knee. It doesn't really hurt when I bend my knee upwards to me, but moreso when I'm extending it out and taking strides. EDIT: Going off that chart, it doesn't hurt when I deliberately stretch it(Namely, siting in my office chair and stretching out, or something of the like). Re: Somehow hurt my knee...Suggestions? - $tevie - 03-15-2011 Any clicking or crackling sounds? Re: Somehow hurt my knee...Suggestions? - OWC Jamie - 03-15-2011 bring your dog to the vet and explain the pain ? Re: Somehow hurt my knee...Suggestions? - microchip - 03-15-2011 $tevie, nope. Re: Somehow hurt my knee...Suggestions? - davester - 03-15-2011 As a person with a long history of knee problems, I can tell you that the knee is a complicated joint that doesn't have an easy one-size-fits-all therapy for what ails you. You really need a doctor to do an examination and figure out what specifically is causing you pain and then proceed from there. That said, there's nothing wrong with RICE and I would suggest that you add advil (e.g. Motrin) or naproxen (e.g. Aleve). Doctors will usually prescribe up to 600 mg advil three times a day OR 440 mg naproxen twice a day to reduce the level of inflammation associated with most problems. That's about double the nonprescription dose and you need to be very careful of stomach issues if you take that much (i.e. always take with food and water, never take it right before you go to sleep. |
