Facebook, how do you use it? - decocritter - 03-18-2011

For the first time in 23 years, I have decided I am interested in seeing how folks back home in Louisiana are doing. It started with a phone call from one of my best high school friends. Then we decided to get into FB at the same time, to see who we could find. It has become fun, and we are planning a girls trip to Florida.

I had to block friends of friends, because of useless info, and figured out that you need to be careful what you "like".

I also had to block folks who turned personal accounts into business accounts, because they clog up the news feed with.

Any tips and warnings?

I've only been using it for a couple of weeks so I'm really still trying to figure everything out. Look forward to seeing what kind of responses this topic gets as they may be helpful to me as a Facebook noob.

My family is all over the country so it's a great way to share photos and keep up with the family news.

I have reunited with a few old coworkers but try to keep my public profile hidden unless you are a coworker or friend of a friend. FB tinkers with it so you need to check once in a while that all is still set as you believe it is. But usually there's folks who rat Zuckerberg out when this occurs so you find out soon enough.

I work at a college and joined because it seemed as if everything was being communicated via Facebook and it was easier than reading a bunch of emails. Some things seem to only make it to FB. Then I found family and friends.

You can also form groups, which allow you to communicate only with each other. So for example you can discuss an event without worrying about what the uninvited are thinking of you. :-)

And you can BLOCK the games so instead of complaining you can just block them out of your life.

I have really enjoyed the picture sharing aspect.

This may be a totally stupid Facebook question, but I'm a noob if I don't ask it I won't know. Concerning the Fortune Cookies and Horoscopes:

On my News Feed I keep seeing these Fortune Cookies and/or Horoscopes. They have one of my "Friends" profile icon/name and it says:

A new fortune cookie has been delivered to you.
Click the cookie to find out what it says!
Read your fortune: Click here

Now the stupid question: Are these my "Friends" Fortune Cookies/Horoscopes or are these sent from my "Friends" to me? Thanks.

It's great for:
- Keeping in touch with geographically scattered friends & family
- It's the default means that my various social groups use to organize events

Stay away from:
- Accepting "Friend" requests from people you wouldn't consider a friend. Feel no guilt when you click the "ignore" button.
- All those damn games
- Questionable links that one of your "friends" may post - I've seen quite a few obvious spam/scam things show up - usually from my more technology-challenged acquaintances who don't know any better and click on said link (which then perpetuates itself by their doing so)

Some warnings:
- Watch your privacy settings!
- Assume ANYTHING you post will be there in perpetuity for the world to see.
