G5 info - afleitikh3 - 03-18-2011 has anyone heard of the G5's being a pretty loud machine, and if so is there anyway to tone down the noise? I have a 2.7 dual processor model. Re: G5 info - M A V I C - 03-18-2011 When the CPUs are cranking away, the fans will kick up. Otherwise they're pretty silent. Even with the fans revving high, they're still not that loud. Have you checked for coolant leaks? Re: G5 info - Chakravartin - 03-18-2011 "Pretty silent" is relative. Compared to Intel Macs they are pretty darned noisy. Sometimes dust in the fans can make them louder. Try blowing out the fans with some canned air. Re: G5 info - onthedownlow - 03-18-2011 I still have a dual 2.7 folding at 100% - been that way 24/7 since they I purchased it 1st day available. Only time it's restarted is the occasional update and whatnot. Quiet always. If the fans are full blast, or close to, other than startup and a kernel panic, or other error you are aware of, then most likely something is not behaving correctly with the hardware, potentially software. Intel macs are quieter, sure, but a G5 is nothing like a rack mount with 10 60mm fans running at 10k rpm... Re: G5 info - Lew Zealand - 03-18-2011 I've used several well-used G5s which spin up the fans at the slightest provocation, like opening a new program or window. Starting from a fresh OS install didn't help so I assume it was something hardware related, including too much dust on some sensor somewhere or possibly too much everywhere. I didn't own any of them so I didn't have the chance to find out if a Spring cleaning would restore them to their formerly quiet state. Re: G5 info - Grumpyguy - 03-18-2011 I have a SP G5 tower and that puppy was loud. Louder than my B&W G3. My 2010 Mac Mini is the epitome of near sweet silence. The IBM chips ran hot and needed air to cool them. Not much you can do about the noise. Re: G5 info - M A V I C - 03-18-2011 Grumpyguy wrote: The IBM chips ran hot and needed air to cool them. Not much you can do about the noise. The 2.7GHz G5 needed liquid to cool them ![]() Re: G5 info - Buzz - 03-18-2011 G5 2.5GHz DP liquid cooled was pretty noisy. G5 2.3GHz DC was almost silent. Several MDD G4's also varied in fan/noise level. One QS G4 very loud, other kinda noisy but bearable until rebuilt under AppleCare... then worked better than ever; totally awesome, but morphed into loudest of all. Vast PPC tower experience shows it's the luck of the draw. As noted, keeping them clean helps, as does being careful w/ how cables and other interior stuff are routed in relation to the fans. It's far from an exact science. Re: G5 info - abevilac - 03-18-2011 I had a 1.8DP and one time it sounded like a jet taking off [and stayed that way]. It had AC so I took it in and the fans needed to be recalibrated. I think it's a process that can be done at home too. Normally, the fans would spin up for a little bit and then go down. Got used to it after a while. |
