"Gov. Butch Otter signed a bill that declares a disaster emergency due to the number of wolves in the state — even though he disputes that the Legislature should have the authority to declare such an emergency.
"The uncontrolled proliferation of imported wolves on private land has produced a clear and present danger to humans, their pets and livestock, and has altered and hindered historical uses of private and public land, dramatically inhibiting previously safe activities such as walking, picnicking, biking, berry picking, hunting and fishing," the bill says. "...it is the intent of the legislature to regulate the presence of Canadian gray wolves in Idaho in order to safeguard the public, wildlife, economy and private property against additional devastation."

Berry picking? I also hear that trips to Grandmother's house while carrying a picnic basket have gotten significnatly more dangerous.
These people are out of their minds and it makes me sick. Northern Rockies gray wolves total around 1,500, which is still a very fragile number in terms of long term sustainability of the population.
700 of them live in Idaho, and the gov't now plans to thin that to 150. Montana also plans to kill hundreds of wolves.

Ah, yes - imported wolves. Brought in by the fanciest upper-crust lupine-loving yuppies who thought they were 'quaint,' right? I love this pseudo-language that pretends that Idaho wasn't part of the wolf's natural range before they were systematically extirpated by humans.
How many people have been killed by this 'clear and present danger' over the last five years? And out of curiosity, how does that number compare to the number killed in automobile accidents? Or falling off of ladders? Or drowning in swimming pools/holes? Just curious....

None.
They've been accused of killing a dog and several cows. They did kill a few cows, but others were probably killed by cougars and coyotes. Since the reintroduction more wolves have been killed illegally by sports hunters and gun-toting nuts than have attacked livestock by something like 20 to 1.
BTW: On the subject of coyotes, the wolves have done their job and thinned the coyote and elk populations so that the north western states no longer have tens of thousands of starving coyotes and elk leaving emaciated corpse all over the place every winter.
Killing all those wolves is going to make a far bigger mess than most people think. Those other populations are going to rebound quickly and coyotes are far more of a threat to domesticated animals than wolves are.

Imported ? They're Siberian wolves ? Walked over the Bering land bridge ? Or maybe they snuck past Sarah Palin through her back yard ?
Coyotes have recovered exceptionally well, to the point that they are all over most suburban neighborhoods in the US. We've got at least two packs of coyotes in the marshland and farmland near our house. We know to keep the puppies and kitties indoors at night.
And guess what ? The deer population is healthy, the bunny population is healthy, etc... The food chain works.
Can wolves attack people ? Sure. Do they ? No, they have enough prey.
Don't want wolves nomming on your herd ? Hire a few cowboys or shepherds. Since Arizona tossed out all them illegal immigrants, hire 'em up in Idaho ?
