[music] Listening to Chicago II - Drew - 05-18-2011

Haven't listened to it for a long time. Excellent, refreshing! Not sure why, but feels good today.

Chicago always felt like a summer band to me; maybe because when I saw them a couple of times in concert (early 80s?) it was always late spring/early summer. But I think that's their vibe; sunny blue-sky days and all that.

I am a band geek for early CTA stuff when they were jammin' and free forming with jazz, latin, and the what-the-hell-everything letting it fly. When I hear the horns blast the opening to Introductions that I know will transition into Terry Kaths guitar runs bringing in Questions 67 & 68 I can feel the tingle in my spine.

There is a bunch of early footage on YouTube with not so stellar audio, but I still love watching it.

Questions 67 & 68

Terry Kath was a genius guitar player, incredible chops...

I've often asked: WHO"S making this kind of music nowadays?

I miss Chicago, BS&T, Ides of March... and Chase (trumpeter Bill Chase had an amazing Chicago-type band).

If you like Chicago you'll love the Mavericks. They are considered Country or kinda a Tex-Mex but they have great horns and a super nice mix of sounds.

For a few years now, I have felt shows like American Idol(t) are luring people out of amateur bands so they never solidify and move on. MP3s have also changed the music business so A&R people do not have cash to throw at promising bands.
