Problem with low battery sensor on digital camera - freeradical - 06-05-2011
I have a Canon A570is, and the low battery warning comes on even when I have freshly recharged batteries in it.
The camera still works. I can take many pictures, and the flash works as well.
How will I know when the batteries really are low, and is there any problem with draining the batteries dry of a charge?

I have NEVER owned a digicam that did a reasonable job of telling me how much juice I have or of warning me that I'm just about to run out.
The only sol'n I've come up with is to carry extras ALWAYS...

Draining batteries-- no problem.
Does this problem happen with regular alkalines? With different rechargeables?

I've never used alkalines in this camera.
This happens with both "normal" NiMH batteries and Eneloops.

The camera was probably designed for alkalines, which are 1.5V each (so 3V total, presumably). Rechargeables are 1.25V, so 2.5V total, max (roughly). The low battery indicator must be set to trigger at 2.5V. Not much you can do to fix that.

The camera has worked for years on rechargeables without exhibiting this behavior.

we have a Canon A630 that does the same. I cleaned the contacts and that seemed to help a bit. I thought about trying those NiZn rechargeable (1.6V) but that would be a nightmare, I would need a new charger, and to teach family not to mix them with NiMH. So I never got the NiZn.

I too have a 570is that does this. I just use it until it stop working, then put in the second pair of batteries. Newer cameras sometimes have a setting for NiMH or Alkaline, so it knows the usual voltage range for the batteries installed. My GF's Nikon L20 has one.

space-time I have tried the NiZn by PowerGenix and Quantary and they didn't last a year. The extra voltage made my camera perform a lot faster and they stayed charged a lot longer than any other rechargeable or alkaline battery. The Quantary was the worst. They would be defective straight out the package.
