Why would Skype suggest an update that isn't compatible with my current OS? - rgG - 06-06-2011 I am still running 10.4.11 on my iMac. I launch Skype this morning and it says there is a newer version. I haven't updated Skype in quite a while and it is acting a little funny this morning, so I decide to install the update. After I install and try to relaunch I get a message that this version of Skype will not work on this Mac. Why would they suggest an update that is incompatible? That doesn't make sense to me. I Google search for the older version and see a lot of people got sucked into this bad idea, but luckily someone posted what revision the older version was, so I could find the download and reinstall without having to search on my backup drive. I have now disabled the "check for updates automatically" in preferences and guess I have learned a lesson to check compatibility, but I still think and update should not be suggested if it isn't compatible with the system it will be running on. I don't recall other programs doing this. Re: Why would Skype suggest an update that isn't compatible with my current OS? - cbelt3 - 06-06-2011 Same d*mn reason iTunes keeps yammering at me to install 10.x on my Cube. They didn't add the check to the upgrade program. At least iTunes won't try to install.. it will happily download the app, and then say "Oh.. so sorry." Re: Why would Skype suggest an update that isn't compatible with my current OS? - D-Rod - 06-06-2011 I have run into this before. I am running a G4 and the update was only for Intel. I don't remember what program it was. Re: Why would Skype suggest an update that isn't compatible with my current OS? - Speedy - 06-06-2011 Yes, happened to me, too. Unfortunately I did download a newer version that runs on another Mac and regret it. I have a 23" display and the old version takes up a small part of that display but the newer version sucks up screen real estate on our 24" iMac and the large window serves no useful purpose. I would not have minded if I had clicked install and it gave me the pop up about not working, BEFORE it installed. Really poor thinking by Skype, IMHO. Re: Why would Skype suggest an update that isn't compatible with my current OS? - sekker - 06-06-2011 Skype = M$ now, so Apple users are going to be last on their minds. Seriously, tho, I wouldn't put it past them to post an update that doesn't work on XP, too. Modern programming is a commodity - you get EXACTLY what you pay for, nothing more. Re: Why would Skype suggest an update that isn't compatible with my current OS? - haikuman - 06-06-2011 System requirements 1GHz Intel processor Mac OS X v10.5.8 (Leopard) or newer. 100 MB free disk space. Either USB or regular headset if your Mac does not have a built-in microphone. Download drivers if you are using an external webcam. For voice calls recommend broadband connection with 100 kbps down / 100 kbps up. For group video calling everyone on the call needs Skype 5.0 for Windows or Mac or higher plus webcams, and at least one person needs a group video calling subscription. For best quality we recommend you use a high-speed broadband connection of 4Mbps down/512kbps up and a computer with a Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz processor. As a minimum you’ll need a high-speed broad connection of 512kbps down/128kbps up and a computer with a 1 GHz processor. http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/macosx/ I should add I am running 2.8.0.851 which is a very old version that I like *(:>* Re: Why would Skype suggest an update that isn't compatible with my current OS? - rgG - 06-06-2011 haikuman wrote: But, they don't tell you any of that when the dialog pops up telling you to update. I found and downloaded 2.8.0.866, which seems to work; at least the test call worked. This was probably the version I had before the update wiped it out. Re: Why would Skype suggest an update that isn't compatible with my current OS? - haikuman - 06-06-2011 Actually all invitations to downloaf stuff should be checked 1st. for the requirements. I learned this many years ago because of the eggggact reason you are stating. This is a common error for many sites. It is like the old rule click save before you get into the body of something you want to save. I politely suggest always checking the requirements.... I only know a little and most of that I learned here *(:>* or there ~~> dm Rudie Re: Why would Skype suggest an update that isn't compatible with my current OS? - Blankity Blank - 06-06-2011 Add Tweetdeck to the list of applications that will pull that trick, up to installing the update and then automatically relaunching and failing to load with a cryptic error message that doesn't give you any idea the problem is that the new version is Intel only. "Boom", an audio file volume boosting app, is currently prompting me to install an update that installs, relaunches, gives an error message warning of a bad install that's missing components, then opens the application anyway. It's a known problem according to their site and they claim a new version of the update solves the problem. Tried it. Same problem. Site says to e-mail them if you still have a problem. E-mailed them and never heard back. I've since adopted the system - requirements -before - download philosophy for any non-Apple updates. |
