"Built Into Lion" No Install Discs - mrthuse - 06-08-2011

Seems this is how install discs aren't necessary?

they're serious about this. I bet they plan to get rid of optical disk in next version(s) or MacBooks(pro)

Seems that if your HD dies, you are screwed. No booting from the optical drive anymore.

Edit: How do you access recovery mode, if your HD is hosed, since recovery mode would be on the same HD, even if it is on a different partition?

2nd Edit: What happens if you have to replace the HD? How do you get that restore partition on the new HD, or am I missing something simple? Would a restore from TM be able to put both partitions back, somehow? Would this mean you couldn't change or replace your hard drives yourself without losing the restore partition?

I was glad when Apple dumped the floppy, but I don't think I want to lose the optical drive.
I'm certainly not going to trust all my music. photos etc. to some server in North Carolina.

Keep in mind that most Windoze machines ship without install CD's these days anyway. Of course the user is prompted to create a 'recovery disk'.

But yeah.. I don't see that. Hmm.

Plus, you might still need to burn a CD/DVD for someone, or just watch a physical DVD, so having an optical drive would still be important.

No optical disk? How on earth could anyone ever restore? if only there were some way of externally backing up the data from my hard drive? Nah, it will never work.

I am not saying you can't live without an optical disk, I just want to know the exact things I need to do, if my hard drive craps out. Now, I know how to get back up and running, but they need to spell out exactly what the steps are, if you have no discs and the restore and diagnostics for the hard drive are all located on the same hard drive.

As for needing and optical disk drive, I still think they are handy to have and not quite ready to get rid of yet, but with flash memory, I can see them going away pretty soon. I seldom use any of my optical drives, but I still like having at least one burner.

I could stand losing the OD from a 'Book, but not an iMac.

Externals are plentiful, just not nearly as tidy as self-contained. Server or no, I don't use optical disks for storage, except for RAM disks, and Apple is no help there anyway.
