CNN running the story on iPhone shut off technology - (vikm) - 06-16-2011

Heard in the background earlier on CNN the brief bit they did on Apple working on the ability to use RFID at venues to shut the A/V capabilities off on the phones while inside. I know it's been discussed a bit before here (I think it was here) but I'm still none too pleased about it. The phone does wonders with video as compared to years back but it's still nothing great. Plus, I'd be curious if anyone could shoot an entire movie/concert on one battery. I've never shot two hours of straight filming using my phone so i don't know. Maybe they are just prepping for better things to come and I'd assume the film and music industry is pressuring them. I still don't like it. :-P

I don't have a problem with artists and/or venues having the right to decide whether their performance can be recorded or not, as long as the policy is stated upfront at purchase time.
It's not just a question of whether the quality is good enough-- I could see wanting to assure that crappy-quality recordings of one's "art" don't get distributed as well.

If your uploading to icloud as you record it might be an issue.

I can't help but wonder why Apple would worry about it? Why would they cripple the phone when every other phone will work just fine? This isn't going to drive any sales.

I also wonder what will keep other places from shutting down the capability? This could quickly get out of hand by stores, etc..

The obvious answer is that someone will pay them a hefty fee for the capability, adequate to offset the sales hit.

I'm not saying bands shouldn't have the right to dictate if their shows are recorded or not. Hey, just like the last however many decades, if they see someone recording or shooting and they're not supposed to be, eject 'em. Fair enough.

I don't like that Apple has got their hands in this. It shouldn't be up to them regardless of how much they are willing to take as a payoff. Although rare, there have been shows I've been to that fights have broken out that people have documented the actions that I'm sure evidence came in handy.

There a tons of bands that encourage fans to shoot/record shows, too. I've been told I couldn't shoot a show with my camera when the bands themselves have said go ahead. In the end, it's not my main reason for being there but as a photographer I don't like where this is going.

Connect the dots. It's going straight to 1984. I'm not a tin hat wearing fool, but lots of people use their phones to record police brutality, etc. Imagine if police cars had portable film jammers. This would be one less thing keeping the bad cops from being honest.

Yeah, I actually think this is a bad idea.

So Big Brother is responsible for the fact that I've never been to a Chicago Symphony performance at which anyone's cell phone rang?
