Lion can troubleshoot and reinstall without a CD - WHiiP - 06-17-2011 From MacWorld" Lion can troubleshoot and reinstall without a CD The next time you need to repair your disk or restore your computer from a backup, you won’t need to search for an external boot disk, those old restore CDs, a FireWire cable, or anything, really. In Lion, your computer will have its very own restore partition pre-installed. The partition—which takes up a measly 600MB or so—is all but invisible, tucked away in a corner of your hard drive until you have need of it. When you hold down the option key while booting your computer, the partition will show up next to your primary partition as Restore HD; click it, and you’ll be brought into recovery mode. Here, you can restore your computer from a Time Machine backup, reinstall Mac OS X, troubleshoot your system using Disk Utility, or get help online by using a built-in version of Safari. You can use the browser to access Apple’s Website, where you can make an appointment to see a Genius if you can’t figure out how to troubleshoot your problem on your own, or any other site on the Web. What if this restore partition is going to be a part of Apple firmware (like those Western Digital passport drives) and Apple's vision is that since you have to buy a replacement hard drive from them (not for the legacy Macs, all the new ones we buy in the next 3 years), they'll have the restore partition already on them, ergo no issue with hard drive replacement and no boot disk. (The older Macs can boot/install off cd that came with their computer and then upgrade). Re: Lion can troubleshoot and reinstall without a CD - bazookaman - 06-17-2011 MEG wrote: Probably. And instead of paying $89 for a replacement 2tb drive like the rest of the world, we'll get the privilege of spending $189 for the special Apple Only Super Secret version. Plus another $100 to install it b/c you shouldn't be allowed to do that either. Re: Lion can troubleshoot and reinstall without a CD - rz - 06-17-2011 Lion can troubleshoot without a CD/DVD... y'all then assume it's the only way you'll be able to. As long as you can still boot from an external drive, that option will remain. And I've already seen on another list I frequent that an Apple rep has confirmed that Lion will be made available "officially" on DVD for business customers. And there are plenty of websites out there that have already figured out how to make bootable DVD's of the Lion Preview release. |
