The Van Halen tour rider really had nothing to do with their dislike of brown M&M's, but was all about whether the promoter had actually read the riders requirements for the venue, that were needed for to support their massive show. It was easy to walk into the dressing room and see if that requirement had not been met, it showed they read the rider. If not the tech staff would do a line by line check for things like the ability of the floor to support the stage & rigging, the electrical requirements, etc ...
