OT: Xbox Development through Dreamspark ? - cbelt3 - 06-22-2011

My 13 year old son is taking an Xbox programming class at the local community college. I'd like to set him up with the ability to continue after this one week class.

It looks like Microsoft's "Dreamspark" program is the best possibility for developing games that he can actually play on his Xbox. Otherwise he'll have to hack or mod his machine with all the associated issues.

Anyone ever worked with this program ?

I'm planning on bullying the school into signing up for it.. the promised in the class promo material that he would 'take home a playable game', but the instructor has informed them that this was not the case. Spending a week with nothing to show for it.. sucks. I don't want him turned off.

How many hours per day is the class? I am in the MSNDAA program and it took me about 3 hours of lab time just to learn the Visual Studio interface for C++ even though I had used it before for generating SQL reports. Taking home a playable game might be possible if it was something "simple" like Breakout.

They're using a drag and drop front end for it, and writing minimal actual code in C# (as I understand it). My son has already finished his first simple game.. a version of Asteroids involving Penguins and Cats, and is working on a version of Frogger.. not sure what kind of critters are involved.

It's pre-packaged for kids, and not full on software development. But enough to give him a 'taste' and give him some success, much better than the old "Hello World" first exercise.

Of course the first actual program I wrote at 13 was a four letter word generator. What can I say.. I was a teenaged boy. :biggrin:
