WD Elements drive flaking out after 8 months. - mrbigstuff - 07-12-2011 crap! what can I buy to replace this? since this 1TB drive is my biggest, I need another around 500gb drive (half-full at the moment) to back up this crappy drive and see if I can recover it with DW or Utility. any advice on recovery? (bad or invalid "node function" ) Re: WD Elements drive flaking out after 8 months. - Trouble - 07-12-2011 BB has the 3TB WD external for $130. I'd run DW first. Re: WD Elements drive flaking out after 8 months. - Robert M - 07-12-2011 Mrbig, If DW or DU can't fix the drive, contact WD and have it replaced under warranty. ![]() Robert Re: WD Elements drive flaking out after 8 months. - lafinfil - 07-12-2011 All my trouble with WD has been with the cheap crappy enclosure and not the drive. Do you have an extra enclosure? Might be a good time to get one and roll your own. Re: WD Elements drive flaking out after 8 months. - Buzz - 07-12-2011 Most of that type of external drive (green/auto power on/off), w/o a manual power switch, should be reserved for backup duty only. Using them for "work" drives is asking for trouble. I actually like the no frills Elements case, but have only used them in mostly on, backup only, situations, where there haven't acted up. Sounds like DW'ing and possible transplant into another case is in order for stuff's ailing drive, fil's likely right about the case; drive itself is likely OK. /// Re: WD Elements drive flaking out after 8 months. - wowzer - 07-12-2011 I've had 2 WD go bad...in a row. I wont be buying them unless their QC gets better. But I feel your pain. I now have two 1 TB drives and a 2 TB internal for backup of my photos. I also have a redundant RAID external enclosure... Re: WD Elements drive flaking out after 8 months. - mjgkramer - 07-12-2011 Just had my second WD failure in the last year or so. This time a 2 TB Western Digital My Book bought in February and used to store my very large iTunes movie library,. The drive would just drop off the line, not even visible to Disk Utility. While copying the movies to another drive before returning it for warranty, replacement, I found that it would drop when copying 15 particular titles or so of the 500 or so. I tried several times to copy those without success. WD is very good about warranty replacement, but the customer has to pay for return of the bad drive, only $4 for the most recent drive. Also, whether by accident or on purpose, they sent me a 3 TB drive to replace the 2 TB. I'm expecting a bill for the difference when they discover what they did. Re: WD Elements drive flaking out after 8 months. - mrbigstuff - 07-12-2011 I should have mentioned that I did take the drive out of the case, as the connector (micro USB) is the flaky part, as others have mentioned. At least, that is what I thought but running DU on it yields the "invalid node" message. So, that would not be the connection, correct? What is the other pin connector next to the USB connection? can I try that? Re: WD Elements drive flaking out after 8 months. - decay - 07-12-2011 i just picked up a 1TB recertified for $44 for Time Machine backups. if it craps out, it's just a backup drive and the price was right. Re: WD Elements drive flaking out after 8 months. - mrbigstuff - 07-12-2011 where from, decay? 3.5 or 2.5 ? |
